Question thread

That really just encourages me more. Im not really doing it for more power, mostly just doing it for a learning experience. Did you do anything to beef up the engine before boosting? Or just planning on running lower psi? Also I am pretty good at welding. I actually plan on going to school for autobody once i am done highschool.

I am doing my build in a couple of stages as I too a doing this for a learning experience. 8)

My car is my daily driver, so I have to have things ready to go and get it done on weekends or short vacations. For stage 1, I am currently doing a stock rebuild on a second 200 I have on the stand. Just a simple re-ring, stock cam, stock head, Weber 32/36 carb, stock DS2. I am going to install that engine in the car with a T-5 and break it in during my daily commutes.

After it is broken in I will install an ebay turbo, intercooler, do the fuel system and distributor upgrade and start with the boost. I will boost and tune and figure out the tune and just all around enjoy the car. Should probably be able to use about 10 psi with that set up. Meth injection will be utilized if need be and will be in place for stage 2 which is:

As money and time permit and as I use the stock engine turbo deal, I will rebuild the original 200 which will then be on the stand and do some machine work (zero deck, milled head, floating wrist pins, bigger valves in the log head direct mount Weber etc. ) Higher compression, better cam, add a set of forged rods I bought, better pistons etc. When and if I break something on the stock engine, I will have the hotter engine ready to install and start the tuning over in the quest for a quick daily driven street car.

I have slowly gathered most of the parts for both of these builds already, just a matter of finding the time.

sounds like it should be fun! just wondering what turbo you plan to use? I think i will be using one with a .63 AR. My car will be my summer car once I get it all done. I just have to source some parts so i can build another engine just incase something goes wrong with the turbo build.

I'd be glad to tell you the specs on my turbo if it helps you bro, but you would be far ahead of the game to do some homework and learn about your choices and especially how to read turbo maps. There is a lot to choosing one besides just A/R numbers. There are A/R's on both the compressor and turbine sides, there are trims on either side as well as housing sizes, wheel "families", and hybrids and flanges and wastegates and the water cooled vs oil cooled vs journal vs ball bearing models. 8)

You said you wanted to know this stuff.

Here is some free research , Junk the 144's and use a 200 , sorry but the 144 is a WASTE of time and money , 200's are easy to find , require NOTHING , just bolt in , not saying dont turbo , BUT , not a 144, after you feel the difference you may say enough , I dont need / want a turbo , either way your way ahead with a 200 over a 144

thanks 4 the link 60falcon144
I guess I better find some time (if I want knowledge) 2 take U up on suggestion, powerband. But not far to go (just over to the stikies here).
Thanks all.

Not trying to be rude but i disagree with what you said. I am not going to turbo it for more power, just doing it for something to do because i enjoy working on my projects and want to make the car stand out even more than it already does. Besides, finding a 200 here would be a pain, the only falcons around are rusted out and stuck in a bush somewhere with no engine.

something to do because i enjoy working on my projects - only falcons around are rusted out and stuck i

true enuff - here in the "rust belt" rusted out and stuck in a bush somewhere with no engine is usually where we start a project. .luckily there seems to be available mechanical parts - 200's trannys rears... , from the rusted hulks surviving on club, forum and CLs sales and swaps ... (helpful Mustangs etc converted to V8's are source)

8)

have fun

most everything over 10 yrs. old goes to the crusher round here. It's NOT that it's urban - or even suburban... may B it's about "political correctness" (real hard to have a modular home or doublewide too) but not even any rusting hulks round here. Neighbor has a collection of John Dears on the acreage. He's gotta get a rattle can, spray em down AND move em around every once in awhile to keep them.

My search is for the '77 + head...

Sounds like an interesting project. It'd B great (4 me) if U kept talkin as U went along (so I could see ur progress and how it's done). I hope you have patients and the ability to due a good search/long study before any buying or irreversible actions (at least that's MY style).

I will be researching until spring as i have nowhere to work on it in winter. I will make a build thread once i actually start working on the car.

Do you have any books, local on-the-ground contacts to speak too?
You been visitin our turbo forum?
I'm lucky, there are a few garage owners local who let me on their property but I kinda wear out my welcome quickly & gotta go slo w/it all. 6 mo. don't seem long enuff, less U got some good skills, tools/equipm., knowledge, & $.
Again, I'll B watchin & rootin U on. Have fun, B safe AND progress!
