Found a Maverick in the dirt (no wheels) can't get a visual on the rearend, tag on door says it's a '74 - and the rear gear looks like it says...
1873
Is that a highway geared 8"???? or Oil embargo squeekbox???
Let me know as soon as possible, those who know your gear ID's, this thing is going to a crusher if I don't get back to it soon.

if the tage says 1873, then yes i believe it is a highway geared 8" rear. it would then be 1.873:1 witch means 1.873 turns to the drive shaft too 1 turn of the drive wheel. lower the intial number (1873) higher speed but slower take off, and higher the number quicker the take off but slower top end. That kinda seems kinda like an odd number when you think about it. Are you sure it wasnt 2.873, ive seen them put 2.873's in for 8's rears all the time but this is only my 2nd time seeing a rear with a 1 as the first digit to the tag in front of the tag. My thoughts, i would think it would be a dog on the 1/8 mile or even 1/4 mile but on the 1/2 mile or 1 mile it would just fly, probly good gas milage on the highway though and alright around town (nothing to brag about), so if you are gonna be traveling alot that seems to be a good rear. i would pull the diff cover and count pinion and ring and put it in the computer to find out what it really is..

thanks... i will snag it and pop the pumpkin when i get it home. Like I said, it looks like it was just dropped back into the weeds when somebody got the wheels off.

Anything has to be better than the stock rear hooked to the 144 now... should I grab the driveshaft, shocks, springs etc. while I'm under there? I'm gathering peices for a 200 swap, in case I didn't mention it.

Not quite. But with an upgrade to 65/66 Mustang upper and lower arms (Ebay perennial) plus 64-65 Falcon strut rods, they will fit. You need the tapered reducing collets for your tie rod ends. Not as much work as it sounds.

Regards, Adam.
