random stalling!

Don't discount the possibility of an exhaust leak causing heat sink problems on the carb body.
Check for sooting around your exhaust manifold (or header).

i had this same problem with my 65 comet when i first got it. it drove fine for 300 miles and then out of the blue... i got the herrkey-jerkys (it is what i call it) in my case , i started my car up it would run for 15 minutes and it would cut on and off...on and off... and stall out. i got too the side of the road and waited for the motor too cool down and nurse it home. i did the same thing.. got a new carb, filter, protronix, and went in the tank, even blew out the gas line(tank too pump). i gone through three mechanics . they all told me too leave them alone . i had a spare fuel pump,no hope, and all the time in the world. i changed it myself and 3,500 miles later i still have no herrkey-jerkys. it may or may not work , but you got all the time in the world! don't get upset ... get inspired!

well, i'm guess i should say "GOOD NEWS" i got a call from the shop and they told me that they replaced the pertronix one and put in points and apparently it runs like a champ now. I'm not thrilled that i'm back to points, not to mention with a flamethrower coil i'll probably burn out the rotor / dist. cap quicker but at least she's drivable. You all had awesome suggestions and I truly appreciate your input!!

Fingers crossed this does it and perhaps i'll give this autolite 1100 to my brother's '62 four door falcon and then i can upgrade to duraspark and a 2 bbl!

Thanks again! Have a great weekend!

Sorry that I was right. That is way too much messing about with one device; it's the kind of thing that jades people in short order.

What is wrong with that company? :?

okay so i finally got to give her a good test drive. it's been so long since i drove with points but it's odd - you can definitely tell the difference at idle, it's not quite as smooth...but after i'm off the line i can't tell a single difference compared to pertronix (other than the fact that now she doesn't cut out and stall!!! )

oh, and you can bet that i am writing a very matter-of-fact letter to pertronix demanding that they refund the money i put into their product.

looks like i'll be keeping the points in place until i upgrade carbs and then go to ds2 or simply put out the money for an MSD. but since i don't know how much longer she'll be my daily driver, i think its best to keep her OEM with points.

thanks again.

ok ok, you were both right!! such sage advice on this forum - as a matter of fact, redfalken was helping me with a DS2 conversion but the parts I ordered didn't fit right (there are zero junkyards near me)....all the "correct" replacement parts had female to female connections and i didn't wnat to start cutting, then soldering a new unit so i went back to the pertronix and got a refurbed one barrel (w/an scv) - i guess i deserved what i got by leaving the pertronix in there.

thanks again to everyone!

Hey marvista66,

Head up to Memory Lane in Sunland, right off the 5. They have lots of vintage cars to scavenge. In fact, they always find what they are looking for to refab in Hot Rod, etc. at Memory Lane. Also, right next door is another yard - "U Pick 'em", "Pick y'r Part" or something. They will have lots of later model Fords for DS2 and other stuff, late model heads and all. It's well worth the drive from Venice.

ludwig,

i've actually been to memory lane a few times as well as pick your part next door. (my bro has a 62 falcon which originally took me out there) however the guys in the shop said they don't have any dizzy's for the years i'm looking for and all the cars outside have already been stripped of their working electrical parts (i.e. dizzy) the only thing i could find out there were a BUNCH of autolite 2100 carbs ( i think that'se the model - same thing i use to have on my 302). Pick your part had more complete cars with distributors in them but nothing i could find that would interchange...IF you are ever going out there and happen to find one, I'd be more than willing to offer you the cost of the part plus your time and trouble should you pick one up!!! Heck, I've been thinking about offering up $100 for someone on this board to find one for me at their local yard and ship it my way!

good lookin out though!

p.s. if anyone reading this thread happens to stumble across what appears to be a workin DSII system (complete with module) please email me and perhaps we could work something out! skycyclej@verizon.net

I ordered everything through either Kragen or Autozone -- dizzy, adapter, rotor, cap, and module for about $100. Wires were extra. The only thing you can't get is the plug from the module to the dizzy, but you can splice your own wires easily enough. What you do get is a warranty, which I've already used with my module!

You know, those DSII modules are sometimes on ebay for about $10-$15 bucks

and brand new from O'reiley's it's $16, Dizzy is $45 but doesn't have the plastic cup part on it which is another $10-12.
- Even though the junk yard cars may be missing the module and dizzy the harness is usually left behind and for about a 15 year span Ford had em in darn near everything. My harness came from a V-8 pick-up and was about the only thing left under the hood.-$5
