Rattling/tapping sound

hey guys, I am having a similiar problem to one mentioned about a bad starter. I rebuilt the engine over the summer and everything had been working fine. Then a few weeks ago it started making a rattling/tapping sound everytime I would accelerate. Once I got going about 25 to 30 mph it would stop. I checked all the bolts to make sure everything was on tight. I did put in a new torque converter when we did the rebuild but kept the same starter. I have checked out the starter but didnt take it apart. My mechanic/good friend doesnt think its the starter. He thinks it might be the torque converter. I did rotate the fan to check it and it looks okay.

Any suggestions.

Nobody here on this forum seems to pay heed to a proper dist curve , its by the BOOK , or by ear method , BOTH will kill your engine if not verified by the proper steps , I recurve Dist for a part time income and on another forum my advice is not only listened to its in high regard, The people there ( FEFord.com) commonly spend 7000+ on an engine combo and make more HP and Torque at Idle than most on here make period, Turboed or not , ok enough of the rant , VERIFY , your total timing . if you don't know how , LEARN HOW, I can be reached at my E-mail address and will be glad to help if your willing to learn. oh and PS adding a DUI wont fix it , but it will empty your wallet ( not that its a bad piece but is no better than a Duraspark Dist and I can prove it )

I understand we are dweebs here, but maybe nobody wants to get spanked for just saying please. So I'm looking for the value moment of your comment that you wanted to share. What did I miss?

I see the same Questions asked and The WRONG advice perpetually givin , sometimes a slap in the face is what it takes to get noticed , and or change made , if the shoe fits , sorry , if your trying to learn great , if not bask in the fog , Im trying to help , if I step on toes that stand in the way of knowledge , I have no apoligies

Being able to definitively describe any kind of noise over the internet is next to not possible much less to definitively interpret said noises. Having said that, the OP described the noise as happening when accelerating which could very well be a timing issue...or it could be a nearly infinite number of other things. For example: My daily driver developed a very "tinny" sounding rattle at certain rpms. (See what I mean about descriptions?) Scared the holy feces out of me as an ISX 565 Cummins is not one of your least expensive engines to repair much less to replace. Finally nailed it down...a mounting screw for a piece of stainless steel trim had worked out allowing the trim to "rattle" against the piece it was attached...it had nothing to do with the engine. Whew!

You don't start helping by delivering a rant. It doesn't help with knowledge sharing, just makes you look like an ass. Every time I see you post, it is in this fashion. "Waah, I am right and you are all wrong." "Listen to me, I know more than anybody else. Waah." Infantile.

VERIFY , your total timing . if you don't know how , LEARN HOW, I can be reached at my E-mail address and will be glad to help if your willing to learn.

That's all you needed to say. Concise, helpful, etc. Not everybody is a genius like you so obviously are, but you have no right to disparage them. You are likely right about this issue. Having said that, it could easily be something else, like a loose dust cover that only resonates at certain rpm's (had it happen to my buddy) or something else altogether. Diagnosing tapping noises over the Internet is problematic at best.

Most here dismiss the timing issue ( unless there bragging on how well there DUI works ) I am only pointing out that Timing seems to be a low prioroty on the check list , and when I mention it its , well your a new guy , I have 1000 posts etc , fine again am I direct , YES , but only because Ive been dismissed as a newbie , as I said before if you want to learn fine , if you want to listen to rehashed bad advice again its the Internet , but I'll leave you with this , Experience is the Best Teacher , However she is rarely the kindest , I don't repeat Old magazine articals or link my anwers to them ( although I agree some are very helpfull ) its just not THE answer all the time

I agree with you on pretty much all the technical stuff you post. And I am sure that you DO actually have much more experience than I do on this.

I might be mistaken because this happened to me, but my problem when i had a "rattling/tapping sound everytime I would accelerate" was the donut on the exhaust (i still have the stock manifold but with a 2.25inch pipe). found out my new exhaust pipe was being hit my my tie-rod ends when i turned right, i took it back to the muffler shop and sure enough there was rubbing on the pipe, check to see if your exhasut is loose, but the way you described the problem it sounded the same as was mine, it wouldn't leak exhast unless underload (which was while moving)

just a guess....

Richard

I had the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I reset the gasket at the front of the cat and tightened up that connector and the clicking/tapping noise on acceleration went away.

I thought I was going nuts or the torque converter was loose.
