HI. New to the board.
Just picked up a 61 Econoline pickup. It has a 144 6. Does run. But i would like to use this truck to tow my 66 mustang to the 1/8 track.
Not sure the old 144 has the guts. (might not tired yet)
Thinking a 200 or 250 will be enough power to make the pickup a car hauler.
But not sure how to id. the 200 and 250's.
I always thought 200's had 5 freeze plugs.
And found one with 5 in the bone yard. Casting number was E1obe as i recall. Guy at bone yard said 250...
Is this a 200 or a 250? Has a weird exh. Right off the exh. manifold is a large canister like thing?
And also the 200's and 250's will they bolt up to my current bell houseing in the 61 Econo pickup?

Thanks...

Dan,

check for V8 style bellhousing bolt pattern and and four bolt waterpump.

your original 2.77 or ford-o-matic falcon bellhousing will not mate to the 250´s 3.03 bolt pattern

Simon told you true.

A 200 has 3 bolts holding the waterpump onto the block. A 250 has four bolts to hold the waterpump on. Also all 250 have "Low mount" starters (but so do some 200's.)

The block is a 1981 The "E" signifies 1980's and the "1" the year, hence 1981. BUT you can't tell anything from the casting number as to whether it is a 200 or 250.

Since it is a 1981, and since Ford always used an "Empty-parts-bin" way of making changes, you'll have to go back and look closely at the bell housing area.

If the starter is mounted above the oil pan line, it is a 200 and all of your Econoline stuff will bolt right to it.

It could (most probable) be a "low-mount"(LM) starter 200 which has a COMPLETELY different bell housing flange than the earlier 144/170/200 bell housing flange. The LM block uses 4 of the six holes on a V/8 bellhousing. The V/8 bell can be adapted to it, but I just saw a 81 Fairmont with a 3-speed stick last week - so Ford does have a std shift bell for it.

If it is a 250 (check water pump bolts), the 250 also has a LM starter and it uses the same bell housing as the V/8's. Std trans Flywheels are difficult to find for a 250.

Good Luck

I used a V8 flywheel and when I had it refaced, I also had them machine out the counterweight. Also gives me an 11" clutch.

Thanks all ,
i like the 3 and 4 bolt stuff, makes it easy for me. :)
Ok, The 200 will be fine i think. loved my old mav's 200 3 speed.
I will get back to the bone yard here this week and have a closer look.

thanks again
