rebuilding head

I talked to my mechanic about rebuilding my head, 3 angle valve job, hardened seats, port polish etc. He said that I would need to rebuild and strencthen a few things in the bottom end to handle such work. Whats with that???? Anyone got any good ideas? Oh well, I dont have the money to rebuild the entire motor so I was wondering if I could get away with just the top end. I am adding headers and would like to work the head while its off. Any help would be appreciated.

you should be fine with getting hte head work That is not a significant increase. what you are getting done will greatly help the motor breathe better.

Sounds like pretty basic head work. Keep your hand on your wallet near any mechanic that tries to convince you that a "3 angle valve job" is something special. Any correctly done valve job will have three angles.

thats what I figured. I really wish I could hurry up and get the head off. Weather cooled down a bit tonight and it rained a little, but man the stang really wanted to run so I post-poned takin the head off tonight, lol. It ran sweet and I am really lookin forward to getting the head done and my new exhaust on to open up some ponies. Oh well, another question, what all should I have done to make sure I take good advantage of this time that the head will be off. I know alot of things, but a little reasurance and maybe some new ideas would be nice!!!
Thanx guys!

Any good work done now will assist in further modifications.

If you're running a stock cam, just shim the old springs up to factory pressure. Check that the balancer is still accurate (look at TDC with the head off) and make sure your CR is in the ballpark.

You will find it easier to fit the headers if you set them in the bay before reinstalling the head. More room to move!

Cheers, Adam.

Howdy 66Sprint6 and All:

Please reread my post at the top of this forum with special reference to the difference in head gasket thickness and planning for milling. You didn't mention what your CR goal is?

And, you might want to consider a 4th angle on the port side of the intake valves, it's called a "back cut". It will lighten the valves slightly and effect an earlier opening and slightly higher lift, with no change of cam. We feel this extra cut is good for a small performance increase and worth the time and cost.

Nothing you are doing will add more stress to the bottom end- unless your right foot can't stop playing with the new life.

lol, that right foot thing might be a problem. As far as CR, Im really not sure what Im shooting for, I will prolly try and see what the guys helpin me recommend and what the machinest says as well. I believe we are taking it to some guy who does all the work by hand, same guy that does my mechanic's race cars or somethin. Oh well, what is a good CR for my application?? I am lookin to have a Holley 5200 on soon and maybe after that a slightly hotter cam.
