Replace valve seals w/o removing the head?

I know it can be done, but I am lacking the correct tool. How do I go aobut removing the valve keepers with the engine installed? I have a valve spring tool for when the head is off - doesn't do me any good with the head still attached to the block. I know about the rope into the cyl block to keep the valve from falling down. Thanks

you can get a valve spring compressor that works without removing the head, i have one. not as easy to use as the other one, but it works. i got mine from advance autoparts for a little over $20 i think.

rope? ive only heard of using an air compressor and an attachment that goes in the spark plug hole.

bust open a used spark plug, weld an air fitting to it, screw it in the spark plug hole, add air, keeps the valves in place to remove the springs, change seals, move onto the next one :) id take a pic of mine but i lent it to a friend for his motor.

another way is stuff a rope down the spark plug hole and crank over the motor (by hand) so it closes the valve.

If you don't have a welder or the skills to make your own, the air adapters can be found at most parts houses. If you have a manual trans make sure you have a good park brake or chock the wheels well when u use it it's a little disconcerting when your car tries to run over you! (shades of Christine!)
