Rod Lengths

Looking for rod lengths here. The 144, 170 and the 200. Also, the Aussie 188 and 221. I have found pistons for the 200 in 4 different compression heights here in Bs As: STD, 1.25¨, 1.12¨, and 1.04¨. This would allow a cheap way to improve the rod ratio. There´s also the possibility of using a 7 main 170 crank (AKA: a 188 crank) in the 200 block with longer rods and shorter pin height pistons.
 
All short deck 144, 170, 188, 200's ran 4.71" rods. (60 to 83 in America)

All 188's, 5.40" approx (68 to 95 in Argie, 68 to 70 in Aussie)

All 221's, 5.14", not 5.41 as stated in the tech article. (68 to 95 in Argie, 68 to 71 in Aussie)

All long block 200's made in Geelong, Australia, had 6.27" rods (71 to 88)

All Aussie and US 250's, 5.88" (69 to 80 in US, 71 to 93 in Aussie)

US 2.3 HSC I4 was 5.45" (83 to 90)

US 2.5 HSC I4 was 6.00" (86 to 95?)

All OHC 3.2", 6.27" (88 to 92)

All OHC 3.9's, 5.88" (88 to 92)

All pre 1998 4.0's, 5.88". (93 to 97)

All post 98 AU 1, 2 3, and BA's, 6.06" (98 to date)

The Argie or Aussie 221's will take a set of 1.25" pistons. You'll make big sales of those, as there are many 188's about in BA!

The 200 will take a later 170 Maverick seven bearing or post 66-67 170 seven bearing Aussie XR Falcon crank. It needs a 100 thou gasket to run a 1.04" piston.

Best option is the 5.2" Lima rod with 1.04" piston in a stock 200 block. It solves all the rod ratio problems. I'm unsure of the rod bearing issues, but the wrist pin is perfectly the same size.

Thanks Deano, big help as usual. I´m really liking the idea of using 221 rods in a 200 with a 170 crank to give a 1.75:1 ratio. It all bolts right together and gives 188cid.

Are we sure about the 144 rod? It would suffer from a near .300¨deck height by my math even with a 1.55¨ CH piston.
 
Did some more math. If the 144 used the same rod, then it had to have had a shorter deck. Otherwise, we are talking about a compression ratio of 5.4:1 even with a 40cc combustion chamber.

Any other thoughts?

According to my 63 motor manuel, a 144 rod is 4.854" center to center length.

Bore & stroke is 3.50" x 2.50"

Doug, thanks for that info. I suppose the 144 could have used the longer rod AND had a shorter deck. 4.854¨ still wouldn´t be long enough if the decks were equal. It´s also not enough to make it a useful rod anywhere else.

Addo has the same 1960 to 1971 Falcon manual as I used to have. I quoted 4.85 for the 144, and have it written in old book, but thought it was wrong.
