rough idle, smoke on start-up

I recently did a complete tear down and rebuild of my carb. I made it a point not to mess with the idle adjustment or air/fuel screws, but I did have to remove the choke adjustment screw. The car runs great once it warms up, but on a cold start, it runs rough and there's quite a bit of exhaust smoke. Does this sound like the choke needs to be adjusted? Perhaps there's too much choke?

Sounds like it's running Rich (Choke Closed too much) On a cold start

And as it warms up the Choke Opens up (Giving you more air) So the smoke dissapears when it's warm.

Needs the Choke Adjusted.

I usually take out the idle screw to give one more place to blast air and cleaner in. You can just count the turns to get it back in the same place it started. Im thinking choke is the problem. What do you mean about a choke screw? Are you thinking of a fast idle screw? Auto or manual? If auto is it air or water or electric? The auto chokes have a black cap held on with a couple of screws that you loosen and rotate to make it open sooner or later. There is also some sort of a pull off mechanism that opens or lets the choke open slightly as soon as the engine starts. On the 1100's its a nut that sticks up near the choke housing. Later carbs this was often a vacuum motor.

OK, sorry it took so long to post a response. I realize that I my first post had some flaws in it. First, I meant to say that I didn't mess with the idle mixture or idle speed screws. Secondly, the "choke screw" I was referencing was the "pull down adjusting nut". It looks to be a little plastic nut in between the choke housing and the carb body. Is that what I need to adjust? If I loosen it, the choke plate won't close as much, making the mixture leaner on a cold start, right? TJ, for your ?'s: it's an auto air choke.
