Was removing the head bolts from my 250 core and the one under the carb flange (outside of the valve cover) was corroded and rounded itself off with the impact wrench. Any suggestions how to get this out? Hardened bolts don't work well with drills and extractors. Was going to just find an old socket and weld it thru the hole in back onto the bolt.

How rounded are we talking. Snap-On just came out with some fantastic open end wrenches with knarles or Teeth on the inner surface that really can grip the bolt face.
If you end up taking the head off there is also a cam locking socket that is designed for studs that works well to remove the remaining stud. Other than that drill and tap to the next size. Good luck.

 craigs, sorry to hear about your head bolt problem. i would cut the head off the bolt and remove the head from the block. then you will have a stud to remove. it should be sticking up enough to heat and get a stud extractor on.good luck...frank..

The bolt head underside is binding on the head's spot milled surface.

Put all the other bolts back in after oiling/cleaning the threads. Torque in order, to spec, passing by the duff one. Clean around it as fully as possible, get a six point impact socket (can you find a Whitworth or Metric that's a smidgin tighter?), and whack it on after heating the bolt head with oxy. Then break that torque first, by hand. All the others will come off fine.

Note: Some sockets don't make good contact for the first 3/64" or so into the socket. Grind this much off, if need be. It's only got to work once!

Cheers, Adam.

All excellent replies. I always wondered what that 17mm impact socket was in my tool box for. Just pounded it onto what remained of the bolt head and it came right out.
Thanks.
