Do a compression test. This sounds similar to a problem I had with broken rings. It would idle rough and die unless I pulled the PCV hose from the 2- barrel adapter below my weber - i.e. it ran smoother and fast idled to 2000rpm drawing in extra air through the fitting in the adapter. I suppose on compression stroke, air was being pushed past the rings, into the oilpan, then pushing the oil up past the lifters and out the pushrod holes. Oil was actually gurgling there at the top of my head. When we did a compression test, cyls 1-4 were 150-160 psi, #5 was 140, and #6 was 60 psi. Cylinders 5 & 6 had broken rings. We were ready to replace the carburetor. Instead we got to pull the engine.
