Runs better With no

Air Fuel mixture screw in it. workin on a friends stang running like crap i decided juist for kicks to pull out the air fuel screw, and it runs alot better with it not in their, it idles in gear runds smoother ext. what could this mean, im lost

Time for a rebuild on the carb maybe..
Sound like it might be choking out. is the choke opening all the way ? is the air filter clean?

Air Filter is clean, carb is new from napa auto parts, i did notice their is small amount of fuel comming out of the high speed nossle, i lowered the float some and it didnt solve the issue. vacume isnt holding steady, so im thinking valve guides or springs or somthing, its definitly not right, what do yyou guys think. Timing is set to factory specs, its a 68 ford mustang 200 with a C4. iim lost. thanks

You are running way rich on the carb. By removing the mixture screw you are leaning out the carb. which is causing it to run better.

it almost sounds like the float is stuck in the open postion which is flooding the carb..

I'd keep adjust the float.. What model carb are you running??
that piece of info might help us determine some possible fixes..

Carter YF... pulled the top off and the float is set to specs, i lowered it a little to see if it wont put as much gas in it but still a problem

Do a compression test. This sounds similar to a problem I had with broken rings. It would idle rough and die unless I pulled the PCV hose from the 2- barrel adapter below my weber - i.e. it ran smoother and fast idled to 2000rpm drawing in extra air through the fitting in the adapter. I suppose on compression stroke, air was being pushed past the rings, into the oilpan, then pushing the oil up past the lifters and out the pushrod holes. Oil was actually gurgling there at the top of my head. When we did a compression test, cyls 1-4 were 150-160 psi, #5 was 140, and #6 was 60 psi. Cylinders 5 & 6 had broken rings. We were ready to replace the carburetor. Instead we got to pull the engine. :roll:
