My car with the new carb...

seems to be strong when cold

when hot, it seems like it is pinging and deiseling..and seems mistimed. It blows clouds of smoke when sitting at idle at a light or something.

timing or carb settting? suggestions? do I have a bad dizzy? need coler plugs? need carb adjustments? a hole in the head?

It sound like it's really rich. I had a carb which caused a similar problem on my car. Ran great cold (needs to run rich) and crappy when warm(needs to be leaner). Check and make sure your choke is opening properly, after that start checking the idle mixture screw and make sure it's properly adjusted. Someone here should be able to give you the proper method for doing this on your carb. Good luck!!!

thanks for a starting the right dirrection

can anyone tell me which screw to turn?

just adjusted...we will see

got my ford hsop manual on cd today...great timing

I have never messed with the Ford single barrel carbs myself. Only my Chevettes' two barrel. This sort of stuff can make a perfectly good car no fun to drive. If the carb adjustment dosen't help I would take a few minutes to check the compression to make sure the rings are in decent shape, worst case scenerio is a bad head with cracks. Good luck once again!!

so it turns out I had my timing WAY OFF...was set for old carb, which needed less advance (or more) to get same amount of gas into engine...

mechanic also aid I have something wrong with my vacuum tree/advance. Friday he will look at it...

he did adjust my timing somewhat...runs WAY BETTER. Top speed is now over 80 (was stuck at 70)

What kind of carb is it?

Often leaky power valves will cause this very problem, and mechanics overlook this. A simple rebuild kit will usually fix things up, if the carb body is straight.
