Well as I state in earlier post (carborator pop). The motor (170) was built by someone else.Adjusted the valves checked and cleaned my carb I bought last year.while adjusting the timing and carb a ROD started KNOCKING.Sometimes it better to do your own work.A 170 is not cost effective unless you want original. But never turn down anything FREE!Thanks for all the help. Now I'll put my 200 c-4.SAD DAY

Are you sure it wasn`t spark knock from leaning out the carb ?

76Maverick could be right. It might be spark knock. Try riching up the fuel mixture or back off the timing (maybe both) and see if you can get the noise to stop. You might also want to take a either a piece of hose or pipe and place one end on the oil pan and the other to your ear. You would be able to hear the rod knocking. Hopefully, the noise is due to the carb issues.

It was low in the motor.I'm going to pull the motor. And pul the rods and main caps. And my neighbor said the oil pump may screwed up.A high volum oil pump would be good.If they make the for a 170.I was going to put an oil preasure gague. We will have to wait and see. Thanks Ken N.

the 200 c-4 is out of my '62 RANCHERO (not finished) 200 Origanily from my "78 Fairmount that had 42,000 orignal miles. replaced the C-3. The 200 is that much better. The 170in the RANCHERO was junk. Now I'll find a 240and ado for my RANCHERO.Thanks Ken N.

Did you check to see if the oil pump drive was installed? That happened to me once. Only it wasn't a knock, but a squeally squawking noise.
The motor in my Ranchero when I first got it had a knock that turned out to be bits of metal in the combustion chamber as if someone dropped ballbearings down the carb. The rear 3 rear pistons were beat to death in the quench area between the head and pistons.
I'm very thankful for Marc giving me a spare motor he had. Glad I could help him clean out his garage!

Well,my son and I also had a problem with a lifter so we started to pull the one yes just one head bolt snaped loose.the rest of them were looser than a spark plug.We decied to pull the motor got it pulled and this afternoon weel pull the pan. Hopefully everything is ok.Pull the crank and have my machinist mic the crank. Then we'll put new rod and main bearings and high volume oil pump, cam and lifters.( the lifter seamed to be ok maybe a flat loab). It was suposto be overhauled.Ring ridge not bad ,but.Cross your finger for me.Thanks Ken N.

Rods may be hitting oil pan.Ijust removed a 200 from my 60 and replaced it with a 170 from bronko.Reused pan off 200 and still had awful knocking.Put car on lift running and could feel a rod hitting pan.Removed pan, took a hammer to it for some more clearance and knock is gone.I had a 4x4 block under back of pan while engines were sitting in shop and must have bent pan up until rod just bumped it.
