Search Frustration. Must Ask.

I am going with a later 200-250 head for the hardened valve seats and bigger ports and valves. What years?

I have always thought that 1977 was the beginning of the bigger ports and such. Am I right?

Sorry for the newbie style question but I used the search function and kept coming up with about 400 hits that were anything but what I needed. I read the sticky about the head conversion but no mention was made as to the years these heads were available.

IIRC, It's 75 and up, and the 250/200 heads are the same. Also IIRC there is some concern about heads off of an 80 250 engine regarding the kind of smog stuff there.

Aha, I knew the Ford Falcon Performance Book would come in handy. The only heads that are worth anything are really the '77 thru the '80 heads on the 200/250 engines. Then once you look at these heads there are two different "styles" of the log, the TOP of one is flat (the top measures 1.5" to be exact) and the other one is a hexagonal (.5" top) shape. If your intake manifold is going to be machined later in order to fit a larger carb then you NEED the flat top manifold/heads. Now let me enlighten you with a lot of numbers ;)

The 69 thru 74 heads were used for the 200/250 cubic inch config. and had a "flat" log, the intake manifold volume is 1240 cc, the combustion chamber was 62 cc, the intake and exhaust valve diameters are 1.649" and 1.38" respectively.

The 77 thru 80 heads with the "flat" tops came off of 200/250 cubic inch engines, the intake volume was 1345 cc, and the combustion chamber was 62cc, the intake and exhaust valve diameters were 1.75" and 1.38" respectively.

The same, with the exception of a larger intake volume (1420cc), 77 thru 80 heads were available with the "hexagonal" log top, but the one that is of main interest to us is the 1977-1980 200/250 "flat top" because of its valves and its ability for upgrades to the induction system.

Thanks for the info guys. Sure beats spending the evening sorting through so many unrelated threads.

The search comences today! Also gonna look for a DuraSparkII while I'm walking the yards.

If you are getting the head off an engine, make sure you get the throttle mounting bracket which attaches over the valve cover and to the base of the carb. Grab the cable throttle assembly complete with floating pedal. It makes for a really nice setup. The Carter YF was used heavily on these engines and the 250 carb had a higher CFM. Carter also made a YF carb for Ford but the YF logo was omitted for obvious reasons.
You can get stainless steel valves from Mike along with roller rockers if you plan on going all out.

Ok, got my DuraSpark distributor and box. Didn't find a head yet.

Not planning to go all-out....yet. That'll wait for the supercharger. Right now, just the head, ignition and a carb change (and probably, a cam).

I have the slightly larger, 1968 exhaust manifold with 2" exhuast and a cherry bomb on the car now. I figure the new head and ignition along with a Motorcraft 2100 2bbl should perk the old car up a bit. I'll probably do the cam also, when the head goes on. I'll get the DuraSpark on the car this weekend.
