setting the timing

how exactly do you set the timing. on my jeep you set it of the main pulley but on the 170 i dont see any marks. they could be there but cant check now its raining. thanks

there is a small notch on the back of the crank pulley. Can possibly be filled with paint. piece of sandpaper or steel wool might help.

I would verify the position of TDC on the #1 cylinder. Then, where ever the pointer is on the dampner, I used some white out to make a mark. Even if you find the indention, it may be wrong...and even if it is right, it can be a pain to see with a strobe light, so I painted mine.
