I've done the cold and hot zero lash adjustment with 1 full turn. What can I look for that would indicate that the preload is too much or too little?

It's pretty easy to know that you have too little lifter preload, you would be hearing a lifter or lifters ticking on a cold start up and or even while its running at higher RPM's.

If you happen to set the lifters with too much preload or even bottom out the lifters internal piston which is a very common occurrence for first time engine builders, until you develop the feel when your ar a Zero Lash. The valves are then being held slightly open off the valve seat so the engine might be very hard to get started if at all, popping out the exhaust or the carburetor, and or if it dose run it could be running really rough or uneven. If you did a Hot lash with Zero and then 1 turn was this with the engine running? Good luck

Hi, going too tight and a vacuum gauge will bounce all over. You should be able to spin the push rods with a little bit of resistance. Are you having any issues? Good luck

"...look for?..."
Takes some experience but spin PR between fingers as wrking & not too tight/too loose. 'Listen' wrks better - if just right -zippo- . If not C bubs above...
