Size & weight of 250

I posed this same question over on the BB Six forum about size of 4.9L engine. My idea was to install a 300 in my 49 Ford. It's just to darned long! I want to do the inline six swap because it would really be different than the belly button SB Ford or worse SB C***y. If anyone can give me size & weight info I can do some more measuring. Also, I am looking for some good performance. Not a full race car but something respectable on the street (i.e. blowing off riceburners, etc.) Is this possible with the 250 in the 49? Info I have been able to get so far says the 49 Ford weighed about 3200-3300 lbs. stock. Can I get hot street performance with this size engine in this car? I don't know what kind of HP & torque any of you guys are getting with your modified sixes. It seems a lot of you are running Mustangs and Falcons ,etc. and I don't know how they compare in weight to my car. Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions any of you can offer!! Mike.

8) my falcon as a curb weight on 2600lbs with the six. a properly built 250 should power that 49 nicely.

This would be an interesting candidate for an imported Australian motor (crossflow or OHC). Or, do you have a 250 already?

49-52 Ford shoeboxes are fairly large cars (my neighbor has a nice 51 Crestliner) and are probably well over 3300 lbs. Looking at his car, you could probably get a 250 in ther pretty easily, but I can't see why a 300 might not fit, at least after just some quick measurements with a tape. It is a beauty that will easily seat a family of eight!

Hot street performance? A 250 will not give you tire-burning, gut wrenching accelleration in such a large car. But with 3.55-4.11 gears and an AOD, it could be a nice cruiser. Decent acceleration, good fuel economy, great sound.

Thanks very much for your replies!! No, I don't have a 250 yet. I have a 429/C6 combo that I was going to go with, but that also presents a lot of problems. The performance would be huge even stock, but I would have to cut the car up a lot to get it in; larger tranny tunnel, probably some firewall mods, etc. and it would be VERY tight. Gas will soon be over $2 a gallon, so that is going to be a concern for all of us no matter what we're building and driving! The economy and sound is what I like about this idea and I also think it would really look cool and attract a lot of attention when I pop the hood to reveal a multi carbed nicely detailed inliner! It would really be different. Thanks again to all of you but I would still appreciate if anyone can supply some accurate measurements so I can think this over some more. Mike

Mike,
Just put a 250-6 in my '65 Falcon. From bellhousing to front of a double pulley the motor is 30" long, to the water pump pulley it's 31". The block is 10 5/8 " wide at the motor mounts. It's about 27" high from oil pan to valve cover breather. It weighs about 350-400 lbs.

My 250 has an Australian head with 3-45DCOE Webers along with other mods. I've been told it prodces around 250 H.P. For a car like my 2700 lb Falcon, the 250-6 is very responsive when I step on the gas. It also has a 4 speed and a 3.25:1 diff. And other questions drop me a line.

If it was my car I would modify the flathead with 3/2s, cam etc!
