Slapping/ticking noise during acceleration

When I accelerate, there's a distinct slapping/ticking noise coming from engine. It quiets down once the car is at speed and I'm not accelerating. But if I accelerate, I hear it. When I apply gas in Neutral, the engine is clean and quiet. When I rev, I hear nothing. But when the engine is under load, I hear that stupid noise.

Does anybody know what this might be?

Fyi, I have a '64 200, 1bbl carb, Clifford header, C4 tranny. This is in my '61 Comet.

I have a 200 as well in my 61 comet... I don't know what header I have but its a 3 into 2 duel outlet.... the factory type metal/fabric gasket doesn't seal very good at all.. even the one mikes shows on his site looks like the factory one... (I have not tried his) but I've used the Mr. Gasket part number 266G. and it seals up better. Even tho it seams to have the same shape as the stock gasket. I've had better luck with the Mr. Gasket.

I had a cracked flex plate, it only ticked under load, once cruising it stopped. Also could not reproduced by revving the motor in neutral

We have the same thing going on and have decided it is an exhaust leak. We are upgrading to headers and custom exhaust soon.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've adjusted timing; no change. I think it's the exhaust. Going to try a Clifford header gasket instead of the cheapy original equip.

Take care. --Andy

If you do, get a fat gasket and use that orange high temp sealant on both sides of the gasket.

If you just checked your initial setting ( what it is at Idle , ) thats not enough !

Get a piece of heater hose about 2 feet long, hold one end to your ear and move the other end closely around the exhaust gasket surfaces. You'll usually be able to hear a leak, even at idle.

Alternatively, on a cold just-started engine you can *quickly* run your fingers around the pipes, feeling for the leaks. But you've got about 30 seconds (which can be a long time...) before you scorch yourself.

How worn is your motor?? I have similar noises in my 250. Its old and tired and desperately in need of some TLC. I know what exhaust leaks sound like, but the condition you describe is similar to what I hear in my car. In my situation it is definitely the valve train components. Its long over-due for some adjustment on the valve clearances. (probably needs a fresh cam shaft, and new lifters too!) Just need to find the time to sit down and work on it....!

sounds like broken pistons. my 300 i'm running right now has a similar noise, appearing when accelerating, and going away when i let off the gas enough to barely maintain a speed of about 50-ish, coming back as soon as a press the pedal any deeper, but going away if i really open it up. sound familiar? its probably bad pistons on mine, possibly on yours too
