Slow as a dog, accelerates like a dead fish.

Tomorrow after work! Got a buddy coming buy (a brake guru, if you will) and we're gonna do them all, top to bottom. New shoes, cylinders, bearings, turn the drums, etc. Should be rolling smooth after that. Gonna do the shocks too while I have it on jack stands. They're original and the thing banks so hard it feels like I'm riding a motorcycle when I go into a turn. Quick question if anyone is still reading this thread: Is it possible that my C4 main doesn't have a bleeder since its an newer model, and that its on the tail? If so, when I swapped the tail out because both the threaded mounting holes were broken, could the shop have given me a tail end with no bleeder as well and thats why all my heat and pressure is backflowing out of the filler/dipstick tube? Just an epiphany that hit me at work, will have to go home to check it this afternoon, but would that setup cause the problem I'm describing? :?

Glad to hear the news. After the troubleshooting, the actual fix was free and easy. So how fast will she go now? Any idea why the magnets fell out?

Dunno top speed yet, haven't freeway tested it due to the brake issues, but acceleration is smooth and strong (relatively) and the idle is so much nicer. They originally fell out due to the crappy tape that was holding them in. I put them back in in no particular order and apparently that was the problem. I put them all north pole out (or south, I forget which), and it hums nice now. Gotta solve the C4 venting issue, and I should have a reliable daily runner. Any ideas on expected gas mileage?

As for the tranny, might it be over-filled? Check the fluid level when it is warm. Too much of a good thing is not good.

IIRC, Consumer Reports 1960 said the original 170 6 would get over 20 mpg and probably more now with the electronic ignition.

Not overfilled for sure. Only seems to blow out after long stop and go driving, and the oil is hot.

Is your cooler hooked up? If so, maybe add an external one. They're fairly cheap and easy. www.bulkpart.com

mpg will be high teens with a heavy foot or low twenties with good behavior. Going to a T5 will increase mpg 5-6.

Yeah, its hooked up. It turns out there is no pressure bleeder on the thing. It was orginally on the tail housing, but when I swapped it out for one with unchingered mounting threads, the new one didn't have a breather on it. I'm gonna have to detach it and either swap it out, or drill and tap it and mount a breather of my own. Its not the easiest thing to do, but at least I know what the problem is now.

I've seen the magnet thing before. A friend had a VW sandrail and it would not run right. Popped and missed real bad. A know-it-all friend kept saying it was his MSD box. When I swapped my magnet thingy, it ran great. Took his apart and there were metal filings like you get when you run a magnet through sand. Cleaned it and it ran fine.
