small block gas mileage

I'm just curious what kind of gas mileage you guys are getting out of your I6. I've heard as much as 28 highway and as low as 16/17 city. What size engine do you have and what kind of gas mileage do you get? Thanks! My I4 pinto wagon gets about 24 on mostly highway driving. That was before it got rebuilt though, I haven't checked it since then.

8) i get 19 pretty much all the time with both my falcons. they both have the 170/3spd/3.25 combo.

My 2dr Zephyr averages 17mpg @ 70mph, has a 200/C4/3.08 gears.
Old 4dr Zephyr averaged 19 mpg @ 70mph, had a 200/C5/2.73 gears.
The 4dr had a homebuilt cold air intake, which DID help.
60mph has been mentioned as a mpg threshold in several posts.
I'm going to try and run 60mph to see if that helps, means I have to leave on time.
I'm going to look at doing an AOD swap. Bill

I thought cold air allowed denser mixture and more fuel = more power, but not better mpg. Am I missing something (would not be the firts time!!!).

200 with stock 60 falcon rearend i don't remember the ratio but it's low. C4 tranny. 22 highway, but that was with 3 people and all the lugguge you could fit in the trunk, including enough tools to rebuild the engine. I'm guessing about 25 mpg as a daily driver.

The coolest part is it has some power. 280° cam with rhoads lifters. I think the lifters make the difference.

Denser air with the same amount of fuel = more power per cylinder full = better economy.

Great info guys keep it coming! You think it would be attainable to get high 20's with EFI and an overdrive in a 67 or 68 mustang with a 200?

Not consistently. The 67/68 is bulkier than its predecessor, and you may find that economy choices for gearing lead you to more "aggressive" driving practices that impede economy! In the 20s, though, certainly.

Very possible. Overdrive, some nice big rims. I'm going up to 15s soon. If you can flatten the torque curve that's best. That is what the rhoads lifters are for. Good strong spark. Cold air helps. Nonrestrictive exhaust.

For reference here is what I have.

0 decked - 9.5:1 cr
pistons .030 over
280° cam
rhoads lifters
balanced rotating assembly
dual valve springs
3 angle valve job ported and polished
Weber 38 dgev (linkage being held on by a lock tie)lol
dual out headers (hehe, everyone thinks i have a V8 )
C4 w/stock rearend *eventually to be an 8"
pertronix dist with a really hot coil

Don't forget a good radiator, I have trouble keeping my engine cool in the summer.

Thanks for the engine specs. It helps to know what you guys are running. I know the 67/68 were a bit bulkier than their predecessors, but it wasn't by all too much. That's why I'm looking at one of the earlier models. In the future, I'd like to have a setup with the new aluminum head, stock or one grind bigger cam, EFI, overdrive trans and headers. Think that would be possible for high 20's? I just want a fun cool cruising car I can drive often but not have to worry about paying $3.50 or $4 a gallon for.

my 61 is 3.50:1 and according to the owners brochure thing that was the only available rear gear so im guessing the 60 is the same

as for gas mileage im getting about 12-15 but that is with a bored 200/C4, 3.50 gears, 3 carbs and a heavy right foot

With my completely stock 1980 mustang hatchback with the 4spd SROD tranny and i believe it came with 3.08 gears (correct me if I'm wrong) and i'm able to pull about 25 mpg doing about 70 on the interstate. I drive it pretty hard in town and get about 13. I hope that helps. If you're looking for more info search around a little bit this topic comes up probably about once every month or two.

Fattie64, In 1961 Falcon came with three gear options: 3:10, 3:50, 4:00, And 3:20. This info is from a FOMOCO Service Manual.

well i'll be darned

i must have the manual for my car haha

Waldo - it depends what was ordered! There should be a tag on the tin hat to rear of your diff.

I figured there'd be some code. I am looking at a car not too far away from me and I'm going to try to get up and look at it maybe next weekend. Thanks for the response, just curious what kind of range I could maybe expect.

my maverick has toped out around 30 mpgs on the interstate @60-65 mph

its was a stock 250/2bbl/c4 at the time

in my day to day travels i can pull 23-25mpgs, it went down slightly with the new 2bbl since i tend to be heavy on it. its progressive so it probably wouldnt have hurt at all if i was easy on it...

still alot more economical than my 2dr regal

well i am getting 15-17 miles per gallon w/ a 1969 mustang L6 250. i have changed points to electronic ignition, otherwise it is stock. i hve 5 lug set-up w/ front disc. and i think a rearend out of a V-8 '69 'stang. and 15 in rims
