Small Diameter Dizzy II Cap

I purchased a new rebuilt Dizzy II for the 63 Falcon and would like to stick with the stock looking cap with the 7mm plug wires. Unfortunatly the Dizzy has the configuration to accept the adapter cap for the larger diameter cap with the 8mm plug studs.

I haven't had any luck cross referanceing. Is there a cap that will work in this configuration?

Thanks, Ric.

Yes, take a look at the link provided by TJ. If your driving like grandpa (which is my plan with the Falcon) you can stick with the standard cap. I would however select a good 8mm Silicon wire though. I just happen to have a bunch of old stock wires from when I was dealing in Jacobs products. I'll be using the Pre-Made wires with the 7mm boot for this 200.

Have fun, Ric.

I dont think the cap diameter is a problem for any fairly normal application. It may have been a slight problem for really high rpm V8's. I think they were just trying to make most of the parts the same so the 6's got a bigger cap too. Look at any of the last stuff that had dizzy's in the late 80's and early 90's, the were about the same diameter as the points ones were.

The 'ds1' cap just screws to the holes that the cap adapter would normally screw to. You have to wonder if ford people did not like not having the typical ford clips they were used to? Only other change is the gender of the plug wire terminals.

Ford didn't change to the larger cap and adaptor until the 1977 model year, thus keeping the small cap design for about three years.

If there had been a significant problem with cap terminal crossfire, they would have changed it sooner.

Also, keep in mind performance ain't the only reason for changes; the larger diameter cap was also cheaper to produce due to a simplified design and less raw materials needed (small, tall cap- 247grams average weight, later large-diameter cap - 146grams average weight)

DO I understand this thread/answer right - that I can use a DS2 distributor (say a '78 that I already have) and removed the '78 cap and spacer and buy this cap (Napa's # MPEFA104SB as mentioned earlier in the thread) and a mating rotor and have the near period correct look of points? I was going to visit my local pick & pull shortly to look for a DS1 set up - I am planning on mounting the electronic module either under the dash or drivers seat.

yes, the duraspark distributor will accept both cap styles, and yes, the smaller, tall-height cap with female terminals will definitely contribute to a more period-correct points-type look once it has been fogged black.

the major difference between DS1 and DS2 is in the control modul rather than in the mechanical distributor. The cap change in 1977 was generally regarded a distinguishing mark, but after 30 years of parts refurbishing, mix and match, it is a draw of luck at best to determine a whole system just by looking at the cap.

It is common knowledge that the breakerless ignition in Ford vehicles first saw use in 1974; yet the Duraspark is listed from 1975 on. I know there is a missing link; a regular breaker-points housing and breaker-points cap, mated to a magnetic pickup and reluctor system; a predecessor of the Duraspark. Having missed a chance to buy one in the past, I have yet to find another one for my collection of rare ford parts which cannot be found in the books (like the C8 head with the factory cast-in port divider)
