smoke out the pipes-help!

OK, heres the situation....car runs good at idle, floorboard it and it goes like heck, but there is definate grayish smoke out the pipes. drive it on the freeway and its constantly pouring smoke. Now before anybody says it, no, the engine is not burning oil-no oil deposits on the plugs. I have not had to add coolant to the system so it hasn't munched a head gasket. Nobody has ever said anything about the outer carbs accelerator pumps-should they be hooked up? I am beginning to think perhaps the ignition isn't able to keep up at higher rpm and loads. I pulled the plugs today and they are all a little brown, but did have some scale on them, but otherwise looked very good. I have autolites right now, but am wondering should I put in something else? What does everyone here use? I'm jetted a little leaner on the outers than some other members, so I don't really think its too rich from the carb end of things. Anyone got any ideas? Thanx in advance, JOHN

Its got to be oil, coolant, or fuel. It doesnt take much of either to make some smoke. How many miles has it been doing it? Were all 6 plugs exactly the same?

Its it an auto trans? Could be the vacuum modulator is shot and its sucking trans fluid.

Never thought about the trans modulator-it only does it under heavy load...I'll have to check that in the morning. The only oil I lose is out the front seal leak and through the crummy chrome breather. All the plugs came out almost identical, so no oil burning. Is disconecting the accellerator pumps on the webers as easy as pulling the clips on the rodsto them? Checked the coolant-right where I left it. Boy-the modulator sounds real suspicious-it is original and I know I have another one in the garage somewhere. Are the bf82 plugs what everyone is using?

Well, the modulator appears to be allright. The little formed hose going into it wasn't fitting very tight and was allowing some vac loss. fixed that and put in a set of plugs-bf 82's don't exist around here, but bf42 do and are the correct ones according to Autozone. Engine does run smooth, but I still see smoke. It has to be fuel at this point and it does come from both pipes equally. The plugs seem to help some so I'm wondering still if I am having ignition breakdown at higher loads.

I'll chime in just to confirm...

I have seen the car many times and the smoke is definitely white, so its not oil. Also, there is also lots of soot on the exhaust tips. It has to be unburnt fuel.
