So I took the pistons out of my old motor... carnage pics

3 of my pistons were just trashed.... I am thinking it was due to an oil pump failure followed by overheating from a blown headgasket.

I was hoping that my old motor had some value as a core.

Glad I started my new build with an entirely different motor

wow thats pretty rough. Was it making quite a bit of noise the last time you heard it run? I can only imagine what the cylinders look like if the pistons are that bad.

If not as a core, at least as scrap metal. that much iron is worth a bit these days at the recycler yards.

I have a whole load of old car parts not worth selling or trying to get Core returns on them. I borrowed my neighbors pick up and next weekend they go to our local scrap yard.

8) i have seen much worse. the scuffing isnt so bad that the block cant be saved. there is a definite lack of lubrication though. since it seems to be kind of limited though it may be due to fuel wash.

Yeah, when I first bought the car, the oil was very thin and smelled like gas. It would also knock every time I let off the throttle, and you could see tiny bubbles around the headgasket area. Funny thing was it had 145lbs compression on each cylinder.

So I changed the oil/filter and the fuel pump. Then when I started it I saw that it wasn't getting oil pressure, so I pulled the pan to check out the oil pump and there was 1/2" of wax-like goo in the bottom of the pan... blocking the pickup. So after replacing the oil pump, and the rod bearings (which were worn down to the copper) I took the head off and replaced the lifters, and had it resurfaced. I didn't remove the pistons as it was making decent compression.

After that "parking lot rebuild" I drove the engine 200 miles or so and all of a sudden it started knocking again even worse than before... followed by a grinding sound and then a headgasket failure... all before I could get the car off of the interstate.

If I were to scrap the block, would I have to remove all the steel from it? Like the galley plugs, the cam bearings, the oil filter fitting, dipstick tube, etc? I told my Dad he could have it for scrap but he didn't seem too excited about it.

Odd that the scuffing is not on the thrust face of the piston skirt. Makes me think that the thrust bearing on the crank is wiped out, completely.

8) before you write off the block, post up pics of the cylinder and main bearing bores.

The block has been hanging outside exposed from a chain for about 2 weeks. And the crankshaft was all fubar'd.... just wait untill I post pics of the mains and rod bearings

I'm not really concerned with selling the engine as a core... there are plenty of junkyards around that could provide better cores than that one. I feel like it's cursed anyway... it should probably be melted down and made into a GM product or something
