Some Crossflow Questions

I think it is time for a new engine for my Stang. I am weighing all the options and have some questions about importing a 250 crossflow.

Did they make a crossflow with a C4 bellhousing? Is it hard to find?
What would cost be? Who can I get one from ( I see JD has stopped shipping them)? What are the best parts sources for someone in the US? Anyone selling these things rebuilt as a crate motor?

Sorry about all the questions but I do like the idea of a 6 this rare ( that will smoke a 289  )

A few answers.

Everybody has different ideas about what type engine they want built (how hot, induction, etc). So Murphy's Law dictates that whatever spec a person attempted to hold in stock would remain unsold in the face of requests for all but that motor... Hence, no crate rebuilds.

You can get a bell for a C4, but better to just grab the whole tranny. Similarly, parts are hard to come by in the US. You will require almost all them to be shipped.

IF someone like Ausheads can more or less guarantee a delivery and price timeframe, they would be your best bet. Crating and shipping one motor and goodies will run you over USD$1000 to West Coast ports, plus all the fees to clear it. He (Phil from Ausheads) got offside with a couple of Forum members as they hadn't clearly negotiated the exact terms of business between themselves. But if you can work something out with him, getting a good standard bore runner shipped with transmission, and just replacing the timing set/valve train with a head service, could see you on the road quickly and affordably. You will still likely be out more than a used running HO.

While we have some excellent engine builders here, I tend to dissuade people from shipping a rebuilt motor, as there is no way a warranty can be honoured.

Actually I plan on running it with my C4 automatic. From what little I know about all this, the crossflow could be had with a C4 bell and would just bolt right up.

Every Australian six since the 1966 log 170's to the last OHV 250/4.1 cross flows in 1992 utilities had the same four bolt bell housing. But it isn't the same as any of the US set ups.

The back of the block differs from the American one in only that respect. The Aussie engines came with optional C4 transmission, imported from the US, with a cast iron case-fill bell housing.

These will fit on any C4 with a case fill dip stick since these transmissions had a bell housing that unbolts.

You could import just the bell housing, but its better to get the whole flexplate/bellhousing transmission thing off a 1971 to 1980 Aussie 250/4.1 liter engine.

Another option is to make up a steel adaptor plate for the SBFV8 / US250 / US300 C4 transmission. This is a very simple item that I've got the CNC co-ordinates of. If you want to, you can have a copy of the details, and have a machinist make one up. It also lets you use an AOD transmission.

Some other guys have been asking about this.

Places like Repco should do a rebuilt engine, but it will be bog standard.

Choke, gag, cough... not my favourite place.

Their rebuilds when I last checked were not the cheapest, and you got less for them than other ones priced similar. Standard rebuild did not touch fuel pump, oil pump, dizzy, carb, balancer. No dynamic balance, no bore checking, no cc'ing, no plastigaging of every clearance. It was my opinion that you were paying a premium for the brand name.
