starter, meet flywheel

Well, I found the source of the shavings in my bellhousings!

Note the extra grooves at around 11 0'clock and 8 o'clock. Any idea why the flywheel would dig into the starter housing like this? Is the flywheel loose? The wrong size? Is there a missing gasket for the starter mount? Is the starter the wrong one/cheap replacement?

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a simular problem when I first started my fresh motor, what I did was to shim it with two washers (one for each bolt) between the starter and the bell housing, so far there has not been any problem :D
 
I had a Jimmy, and I got 3 starters,and spent a combined total of...days flip flopping, shimming, re-shimming. Burned up 2, chipped the flywheel minor (kinda lucky), till I found out the guy was giving me the wrong starters!

And its funny, cause he was convincing me and CONVINCING ME the whole time that it was the right one and that it must have been a flywheel problem, MY problem, rebuilt the first one twice, then the third time, gave me another one, and ASSURED ME that it was right. My dad has done business with this guy for 30 years. The guy was "straight up", at least from when he used to know him.

Turns out it WAS the wrong one! I think the guys business was slipping, and I smelled alcohol heavy on his breath one time that I was there, so I went ELSEWHERE and got the RIGHT one. Worked fine after that...after every start not quite right, rolling under it, reshimming it, starting it again, trying other shims. The mere chaos of rolling under an un-jacked Jimmy with a millimeter of clearence between my chest and the oil pan, all the while trying to turn a ratchet where my elbows bumped every time I made even a slight moveand doing that at least 150 times.

I coulda shot that guy, if I was a loon.
