Starter Motor Screeching - 1962 Hardtop Falcon with 200ci

It's supposed to be a 200ci 1967 block (it's 5 bearing) with a 1969 head if that makes a difference...

Trans is 3 on the tree manual.

Has anyone else had this issue? Bought a new starter (the old one had worn out, wouldn't turn the engine any more), physically a little bigger than the old one but mounting holes etc all lined up.

When I use it there is a horrible screeching from it when the engine catches (as soon as it catches) like a novice holding the key over for too long (no I'm not a novice  )

I bought Napa part number 76061 re-man with a 3 yr warranty. Says Pro series.

They are going to exchange it for another starter tomorrow (hopefully if they get one in stock) but I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this in case it wasn't the starter.

For info if you pull the coil lead or trigger the solenoid from by running 12v to the trigger firect from battery (so it can't start) everything sounds good so it definitely is only the starter & only once the engine has fired.

Any info appreciated.

Cheers,

Dan :)

only when the engine starts running?
sounds like your bendix isn't retracting and the over-running clutch is engaged
solenoid spring might be weak or broken

it would be the return spring for the solenoid

the solenoid engages from the current flowing through it, the solenoid moves which causes the bendix to shoot out, when you release the ignition, the current stops flowing which allows the spring to push the solenoid back to the at rest position
if that spring were broken or weak, the bendix would stay engaged, causing the over-running clutch to engage, which is a noisy little piece of machinery if it's engaged

Makes sense... thanks. Hopefully another starter (going to swap it in tomorrow if they can get one) will sort it out then!

Switched out the starter motor today... the new one looked a little different again. This one had more tolerance in the line up on the bolts than the previous one & the screeching is worse! Now it doesn't release at all once the engine is started.

Anyone else had alignment issues with the Napa starters?

I'm hoping they still have my core (they said they'd put it by for a few days before sending it off just in case) as I think I'm going to return this one & try one from Kragen instead.....

The old one didn't screech at all it was just very old & burnt out & wouldn't always turn the engine over fast enough for it to catch.

Dan :)

it's possible that you might have to shim the starter out... there is a specific starter for automatic Vs manual, you gotta get 'em right or you get interference

I have the original starter on my 64 falcon ,200 engine and 4/sp transmission that I bought new in 1964 . I have had it rebuilt a couple of times by a local rebuilder , cost has always been about the same as a rebuilt unit that's ends up being junk most of the time . my starter is 6 inches long by 4 inches in diameter .there is a 3/16th shoulder built in it that spaces the starter gear to the flywheel gear . there are no shims and the bolt holes are round . Get your old starter back and if you cant find a local rebuilder then hold on to it until you try the new one before turning it in for credit .

Wish I'd known that info beforehand... it's gone now. The Napa guys kept it for a couple of days but 2 different guys have been dealing with it & it seems they don't talk to each other!

They are trying to help me out anyway......

I understand your problem with the store . I had a similer problem with a carb. though napa , they were unable to get the right carb for me so I insisted they get my old carb back from the rebuilder , or pay me for my carb . they got it back , so they can if they get right on it. your name or some other tracking no. is on the old starter , they can find it . Its got a no. so if it cant be rebuilt they dont give credit for it . I worked in patrs , it sounds like employes that dont no how the system works or dont care .

Thanks for that info...

They have tracked down another starter for me, I'm picking it up tomorrow but if not I'll create hell until they get mine back... :D
