My son and I began fixing up a 68 Mustang with a 200cu manual 3 speed on the floor. We recently replaced the engine, clutch, pressure plate, had the flywheel resurfaced and starter, or rather starters. When we took the old engine out a 200cu with a bad cylinder, I noticed the starter, a two bolt type, was just hanging loose. We replaced the engine and used the old starter. The Starter worked fine for about a month then the bendix went out. We replaced the bendix and the car started fine for about a month. We noticed that the starter was hanging loose a couple of weeks ago. We tightened it up and the car only started a couple of times, then would not start at all. We loosened the starter a little and it started. We then got a rebuild from Auto Zone that lasted about a week,. The bearing in the end of the starter was trashed and it looked like the bendix might have been rubbing the flywheel. We replaced it with another and it lasted 3 starts and the bendix would not engage and it looked like it might have rubbed the flywheel again. So we got another rebuilt starter and placed washers between it and the bellhousing it works but is still makes a little noise. I turned the flywheel and didn't see any scratches. Could we have the wrong starter? bent flywheel? Are starters all the same for the 67-68 Mustangs? Any idea anyone?

Automatics and manual transmission cars use different starters (the nose cone is different because the starter gears need to penetrate to different depths).

:D IIRC,the motor part of the starters are all the same, wether it is a 460 or a 144 or whatever. The only difference is the nosecone and Bendix.

I checked, and I have the right starter, gave the numbers to a local Mustang guru. I reinstalled the starter. I made sure it was straight and on tight and I still get a noise at the end of the start. I took it off and I don't see any marks on the bendix or on the flywheel. There is no bolts in the way on the flywhell and there are no chipped teeth or scratches. The noise sounds like the bendix is not disengaging for just a second. Any thought or suggestions?
