Starter Replacement Question

While working on the car the past couple of weeks, I noticed that the spacing between my started and my headers (they are 7-8 year old Clifford headers) is not enough to allow the removal when my starter eventually gives up the ghost. It's is a rebuilt chrome one that has already been on the car for 6 to 7 years. Right now I got the head off the block doing some work on the Offy adapter and wondered if someone could advise and point me to a good mini starter listed at a reasonable price. I'd rather not go the chrome route again if for no more that the cost is higher and it ends up being buried so deep under the headers and other gear that you have to look hard to see if the one I have now is chromed. Got the 200 with a '70 C4 tranny.

I seem to remember this coming up in the forum some years ago. I think there was some talk of using the smaller starter for the FE.

I would like to get this answer as well because the T-5 conversion will force me to go to the two bolt pattern.

Anyone remember the details on the FE starter?

Thanks, Ric.

I don't need a starter, but I thought when I do need one, why not get a lighterweight one. As you suggested, the 390 starter. I looked it up and the recommended starter from Autozone is, A3131.

That's the same one they reccommend for my 170.

I found this on ebay:

Maybe it's smaller and less weight.

Maybe I'm not following this thread correctly. We're tlaking about taking off the stock starter and replacing it with a different smaller, lightweight stock Ford starter that also happens to fit our engines. Correct?

That's the idea.

For those of us converting from 3 to 2 fastener bellhousings as well as those who would like more room between the starter casing and the header tubing.

Thanks, Ric.

So I guess my 170 already came with the same lighter weight, smaller starter as the one used on the 390.
AutoZone part # A3131, lifetime warrenty, $40.

Thanks, I saw the one Mike has listed, but I was in hopes that someone had already made the conversion and had a specific listing for one they had already tried that was a little less pricy than a chrome one. Don’t know if I’m looking at he right part or not, but I see mini starters that at least look close to the same, but about $100 cheaper when not in chrome. I hate to order somthing and have to return it. I looked up the reference to Parts America and the one listed look much like the one I have. My question is. Are the ones for the 390 shorter than the standard ones for the I6?

i use a bosch starter motor on my 250 the part number is bxf129. in australia these starters are used from the sixties 170ci to 250 ci motors right up to the lastest six cylinder offerings from ford. i have a 250 2v motor in my car with this starter motor and its the easiest starter to put in and out with extractors. its a 2 bolt design has a solenoid on top and its also got 1.1kw of starting power! hopefully it fits on the u.s motors, but i highly recommend it.

:D Now I could be wrong(and possibly am).Over the years I have heard that the motor for the 12 volt Ford starters are all the same. All that is necessary to interchange from one engine is to changfe the nose cone and Bendix to match the engine/trans combo that you are using. If this is not correct please correct me.If I am right this might be a real help to someone in getting their car or truck on the road faster.
