starter woes

I've been converting my car from a 3 speed automatic to the T5. I've got the car all back together, the flywheel resurfaced and the ring gear turned around and offset so its basically brand new on the flywheel. Anyway, i've replaced the starter and now when i try to start the car it makes a terrible noise. It does turn the engine over, and it will crank it, but it sounds like the starter is only grabbing on like every other tooth of the ring gear and hence ripping it up. Im using the same kind of starter from my auto, since both bellhousings were 3 bolt. Is this ok? And do you think its something wrong with the flywheel or the starter? Thanks fellas, i'm so close and this forum has definitely made all this happen, and thats awesome.

You can't use an automatic transmission starter with a manual transmission flywheel. You need a manual transmission starter.

?? It's the same part number in NPD, unless you have the later 2 bolt starter beginning in 66 on manual transmissions. My bellhousing is from a 65, and according to the inline pages, i reuse my starter.

I've spent the better part of the day trying different starters, and i'm back to where i started - the 65-66 auto (also manual 8.5" clutch) starter. It still grinds. Is there some spacer plate that goes between the crankshaft and the flywheel? Because there was one that i took off the auto tranny, but i didnt put it back on because i thought it was only for autos to prevent the flexplate from locking against the torque convertor. Any help or insight would be awesome. thanks fellas
