Storing a head

What is the best practice for storing a head. I'm assuming you want a somewhere flat so that the head doesn't get warped. Or is that not a concern?

What's the best thing to do with extra heads that you don't plan on using at the moment, but plan to use in the future?
 
Place them in bubble wrap, and make sure is free of oil. Then smear some multi-purpose greese on it.

(Then post it to my street address in Dunedin, New Zealand.:twisted:

You know that I love little I4 Tempo/Topaz engines. I've been trying to log on to the I4 forum to get as much info as possible).

It's all good. When I win the lottery, I'll buy a vintage Tempo and have it shipped to ya. Then you can have all the fun you want.

Seriously, should I worry about storing it in a flat concrete surface to prevent warpage or not?

BTW, their HSO heads and not HSC heads for a Tempo/Topaz.

I do not believe so. From what I can tell, the oil filter comes straight out and is parelle to the ground. On HSC/HSO's the filter is tilted down.

That's not to say that they didn't make an aussie varient of the 2.3L OHV HSC/HSO. Personally, I've never heard of one, but I'd like some more info on the engine you pictured. Is it an engine you own or have in your possession? What is the displacement? OHV or OHC? Do you know the bore? Is it an X flow?

Hmmm....could it be possible. An X flow in a Tempo.

The engine is still in my parts car, but I just removed the last of the accessories from the engine bay. If I can, I'll try to get some shots of the engine for you guys to see.

This one was imported new from ford, I think its a mustang 2 engine
It is still in new cond and has never been started
Do you know about these engines?
Im lookin at getting some parts from Esslinger

Its a U.S 2.3
I think the bore is 96.5mm
Yes it is OHC

If my caculations are correct. That's a bore of aprox 3.79 inches.

Sounds like you've got the a 2.3 Lima engine there. It was used in US mustangs, rangers (small trucks), thunderbirds, and probably afew other cars/trucks. I know it was TCed in the Thunderbird turbo coupe. IIRC, this engine was based on the 2.0L OHC engine used in the US ford Pinto. I'm sure there are other guys here than can provide more information than I can about this engine.

Sadly, the engine I'm talking about was fords 2.3 OHV engine. Which is basically a 200 I6, with the last 2 cylinders chopped off.
 
Did you ever get an answer on how to store the cylinder head?

I thought that you stored them standing on end (vertical) to prevent the warpage?

Would be interested if you got other suggestions.
 
No, I always figured they'd be stored flat on a hard flat surface like concrete. Not sure tho.
 
Well, I doubt that you would have to worry about "warpage" when storing a head, of anything rust and corrosion would be my concern, I would probably lightly coat it with oil and place it in a garbage bag and just set it on a shelf or under my workbench,. Just make sure you label it "NOT GARBAGE" so it doesnt end up getting tossed :wink:
 
A head will not warp if you don't rest it on a flat surface. The thing that warps heads is temprature change, and more that mother nature is likely to throw at it. The biggest concern is rust. As I live in Arizona and I don't ever have a problem with rust, you probably know better than I do how to protect iron from rust.
