seems as if I still have a push rod issue (or something)
...sounds like marbles on light accelleration...

kind alike one of those perpetrual motion things with marbles...

I think I got shafted on my head redo

any idea what this might be?
worn guide?
worn rockers? (they seem original)

suggestions?

Preignition, pinging, knock. Back the timing off a couple of degrees. If that helps, try adjusting the vacuum advance so you need more vacuum to get max advance; then advance it back to where you had it.

how do I adjsut the vaccum advance?

I underdstand turning the distributor...but thats not vaccum...

this confuses me...

i have a 68 200 with the dual advance. i removed all the hoses and dont use the vacuum retard (the inner side of the cannister). i ran one hose from the manifold vacuum on the side of the manifold(not ported vacuum).

you can check the vacuum-advance operation by removing the distributor cap and suck on the hose. if it moves the diaphram is good. the outer side of the vacuum advance retards the timing when you accelerate.

i set my timing at 14BTDC ( with vacuum advance disconnected) using a timing light. i dont get any ping with regular gas. if your engine runs hot makes it ping easier.

any chance you got a smaller chamber head on there off an earlier falcon or something?

HI CHAZ
I think bigredrasa is under the imprestion you may have an adjustable vacuum advance. But I think yours is a stock type.. (non adjustable). On a adjustable one you put like a allen wrench in the hole and adjust it.. you may be able to change the springs in the dizzy to do the same thing on a stock type.( I think).. But I think your timming just needs to be retarted a little, just go a coupe of deg. at a time and see how it is..

i do have the stock dizzy with a pertronix in it

I replaced the vaccum advance thingy last year and have only driven about 1500 mile since

let me play with the timming but this noise seems constant

I just thought of something.. are you sure its comming from the motor?
If your lugging it (low speed in high gear) some times a wore out tranny well make the same rattling type noise as a timming issue. just a though.
Tim

go on...I am listening

I never thought of that....

It seems that after I get up off a gear...then I lightly press pedal I get a rattle like marbles...

hmmm...

since I have 425k...and I am not sure if it ever got a clutch or anything...maybe a t5 in the future
thanks for the headsup

bottom line...parts only...whats a T5 conversion cost?

The rattling may be comming from the gears in the tranny. Wore out and lose, so at low speeds in like high gear it would rattle. Anyway thats what my dads truck did. You might try and see if it does it in like a lower gear. (not sure what you mean by get up off a gear?) again just a thought.
Tim

seems to happen most if I jump on it...then release and then lightly ride the gas again

would make sense if it was tranny

Still sounds like preignition to me. Try this simple test, disconnect your vacuum advance and plug the vacuum source. Drive the car and see if it still makes the noise when you jump on it. Your car might accelerate slower than normal due to the lack of vacuum advance, but it will quickly pinpoint whether the noise you're hearing is ping or something else. :?

You have very little guarantee that the dizzy is doing its job best for your sitcheration. It may be advancing too soon, advancing not enough, retarding too slow, or plain sticking at time. Wear in the drive gears or timing set can mess with it a little, too. Pertronix or points, the basic functions of the dizzy are still what the motor depends on.

Seriously, look up a place that does recurving on a dizzy machine or dyno tuning. Have a Durasmirk installed with a curve to suit (I don't feel the MSD is then needed). Then, drive it hard and feel free to tell me I wasted your money (highly doubt you will).

Adam.

i think I have too little on mods to warrant a dyno test...

good news though. I advanced ny timning...and the noise has DECREASED by abbout 70%. It runs nice now...but I still may tweak it some. I think my next modifications will be exhaust and maybe a dizzyII...so I can be fully adjustanble....

oh, and post divider when I do it

like I said, if I HAD KNOWN I was going to be doing the whole engine...I would have done it dfiferently..cam, head etc

I might also start working a replacement head...for fun..I might swing by a junkyard and look for a post 79 head

you guys are great...have I told you lately?
