Hi Guys, new to this forum,
I have a 68 I6 with C 4 the problem is hot start, if I go to the store or try to start after 5/15 minutes it acts like it is flooding, it will start then die 3 or 4 times so I have to sit and clear the engine for a couple of minutes before putting it in gear or it will die, it has the 1100 single barrel carb, I have went through it twice, I have raised and lowered the float setting but it doesnt seem to make any difference, another thing I noticed is between 20/ 40 mph the engine seems to have a surge, I have 428 miles since I completely restored the vehicle, any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks Fred

i had this exact same problem. when it gets hot and then you shut it off, it has a rough startup. i narrowed it down and i'm pretty sure it was actually boiling the fuel in the bowl off and then when you go to start it, obviously theres an empty bowl and it takes a while for the fuel pump to get it back up to where it should be. what i did was i bought some phenolic gasket material (they use the stuff on aircraft, it doesnt transfer hardly any heat) and then just made a template out of it and cut it out on a bandsaw. haven't had any problems since.

hope that helps

My 82 Cougar does the exact same thing. I have a spacer but its somewhat like hard rubber. I'd add a second one but I don't have the hood clearance.

Have you checked to see if the choke is operating correctly? When the car acts as described, make sure it's opened up.

Mine did pretty much the same thing. Try bumping your timing up to about 12 degrees. Lowering your float and building a heat sheild to go between the carb and manifold.
