Welcome to the forum. Most people start by upgrading the ignition with either a Duraspark, Duraspark II, or Petronix depending on which they prefer and which carburator they are using. One of the next items is usally carburator, either a quality rebuilt 1bbl or 2bbl on adapter. And after that you should upgrade the cam and exhaust to take advantage of the better spark delivery and better breathing.

And if you want to tear into the motor there is plenty of things to do..

Thanks. thats exactly what Nathan said.. 8)
but would any of those parts work with a bigger block?

i was actually thinking of building a new engine bcuz ive heard from a couple people that-- one of my rods may be sticking... ?? or something about the rods/ lifter...

i have no cLuee :? ... i really dont know whats going on with my car>> but its making a crazzyy ticking noise/ black smoke/(doesn't feel as powerfull..)/been idling kinda weird..dies... all this stuff...

ehhh :?: does anyone know what any of these symptoms mean?

hold up... im kinda confused and i probably confused you guys too. heh.. ok. just so im kinda on the right page with you guys....
the 144-250 ci "small block" is an inline six..
..is the 240-300 ci "big block" also an inline six??
if so, i was wondering>> if i got a duraspark ignition and decided to advance to a bigger engine, would i still be able to use that ignitoin and carburator with my new, "big block" engine??
...i hope that makes sense. im sorry..im still learning this stuff.

yep, :D this is an inline six forum

alryte cool... i think im catching on.. pheww.. haha ok soo.. if i wanted to put in the "big block" six...would i have to do any strengthening to the body or get new suspension? bcuz i was told those were some of the things i would have to do if I was going to put in a V8, small block 289.
If i wouldn't have to re-do much, i would much rather put in a "big block" six.
what are the advantages of having a big block inline six over a V8?
thanks for being patient :)

not to sure, i know there are people here that have swapped in a big six.
i know with a 300 you would have to upgrade to the vee-eight suspension, also there is alot of work you would have to do to the firewall that include a big hammer and a torch

i think you would be better off building up the 200

yeah.. it would probably be my daily driver.. the 300 seems like sooo much fun and id for sure get into doing everything to make it all cherry... but honestly, the 200 would probably be the perfect little project for me.

i would stick with the 200, i pulled mine rebuilt it and put it all back in and had it running in a weekend. as long as you have the right parts it's real easy, the only thing i had to bring to a shop was the head

yO, yeah- i think im gonna stick the 200
..also: i was wondering...how much did you spend on your rebuild??

oh yeah..i know you got the glasspack... but does it still have that nice, original rumbling sound?? im looking at a new exhaust system too..heh.
im starting to plan everything out..>> all the exact parts i want to put in and all that.. haha you know how it is.. damnnn.. i wanna get started on this thing now!! :D :D
you seriously did everything in a weekend?? :?: ..impressive..

oh yeah... is there anything else you can do with a 200 that will bump up some power??

yeah i really did it in a weekend, the only reason is because i wanted it ready for my ex's prom

oh yeah..i know you got the glasspack... but does it still have that nice, original rumbling sound??

it's got a nice vee-eight rumble, every where i go people ask if i have a 302, when i say nope i got a 200 l6 they say that i don't know what i'm talkin bout then i pop the hood and they pee on themselves

i was wondering...how much did you spend on your rebuild??

i spent around $1,000 and i changed everything but the cranck and pistons

oh yeah... is there anything else you can do with a 200 that will bump up some power??

yep there is alot you can do to bump up the power
port and polish the head
cam
2bbl carb
dual out header

that's the easy stuff
go here to get what ever parts you need http://cquesttechnologies.com/fspp/
here is another site that will get you thinking http://www.geocities.com/mustang_man_1966/

ok there is plenty u can do to a 200 to bump up the power and for a beginner like urself htis would be the perfect project seeing sa how easy they r to work on I my self tore down my entire block and reassembled it adding many performance parts all during Christmas vacation with a little help seeing as it was also my first rebuild ( o yea im only 15 so that should give u hope) i guess wut every1 is forgetting top say about performance build ups is where to get the parts so im gonna help u with that this site is where many of us have gotten our parts www.fordsixparts.com there is alot of great stuff here for ur 200 trust me ive already paid about $1500 in parts and they work

just thought i would help.

Unfortunately as you noticed they use the word 'rods' one time too many when talking about the internals of an engine. You have the rods that connect your piston to your crank, then you have pushrods that work in between your lifters and your rocker arms. Based on what you have said it sounds like you have a lifter that is either going bad or is bad that you should replace (perfect time for an upgrade if the ignition and carb are ready) You also said it blows black smoke, that is usually from the car running too rich, getting more gas then it can use. Sounds like an excellent reason for a new carb

My buddy swapped his old points for a Duraspark distributor and loved the performance and smoothness after it was done. He was a little timid getting started because we got the D2, wiring harness, and coil from a wrecking yard car, but it fired right up after we wired it all in.

When talking about six sizes, the 144/170/200's are all the same external dimensions, maybe bolt hole locations and sizes change but essentially they are the same. The 250 is lumped with the other small sixes because of a lot of shared features like heads and ignition but they are physically a little taller and share bellhousing pattern with the Big sixes and small block bent8s.

The 240/300 are completely different beasts and I dont know of many that have swapped them into early cars, they are taller, heavier, and require modified oilpans and other custom brackets and air cleaners. It would cost significantly more to upgrade to one of these then to upgrade your current 200.

come on 68_inliner get with the program :D
i already put that site up

Welcome 66 stang, I congradulate you in your choice for a classic vehicle rather than a ricer.
In a previous post most of the quality parts are available from mike at www.fordsixparts.com
In the near furture there are many new performance parts, especially cylinder heads which will be ready by early 2006.
Looks like your ride is realnice. Very clean & ready for some performance parts.
If in doubt just post your questions on the forum if you need advice
Enjoy your ride, William
