Symptoms of a dizzy going south?

Can someone out there tell me what the symptoms of a dizzy going south are? My car is acting up on me lately, and someone told me it might be my distributor starting to act up. Something about maybe play in the shaft of the distributor.
The engine is a 170 six from 1963. The only mods to the engine are a set of AzCoupe's headers.

Erratic miss at all speeds, inability to accurately set timing, poor overall performance, chronically cracked caps or caps coming loose for no reason.

yep...I have some of those symptoms coming and going.

guess what it turned out to be mor ethan anyhing...a blown head gasket...

I'll post pix later in the week....but between 5 and 6...gone..not there...so sometimes it sealed, sometimes it didnt, causing erractic behavior.

I still do I have a wobbly dizzy...or is that a dizzy dizzy...
