I have been wanting to swap to the T-5 trans for a while now. I just now got hold of a guy with a 4-cylinder t-5 that he is ready to let go of with shifter for $200. should i jump on this offer the trans is in readily drivable shape and wont need to be rebuilt for a while. He also has many other parts from fox-body Stangs. What else should i try to get from him. what other parts do i need for the swap. Ive seen some of the lists for the swap, but im not exactly sure what else i'll need. Also, swapping to a 3.20 rear is in the plans but dont know how to do that either. Looking for some advice in the best place i know.

Get the Holley-Weber feedback carby (all pre 1984 ones had it, and not the 1-bbl, even though its far from ideal), oxygen sensor, air cleaner, pedal, and cable.

I'm thinking that that some of the gear will be handy if you are going to put a good 2-bbl carb on it. No point in a t5 unless you get to enjoy some extra power flowing through it.

i bought my 200 being told it was rebuilt and would run fine, and found out it has a cracked head and was in need of a rebuild. so try to have someone you know that is really familar with cars look at it, my dad is friends with a mechanic so we consult him from now on on our purchases. not trying to discourage you, just dont want what happened to me to happen to you.
a few sites:

hope that helps you some.

I just worked on my T5 this weekend. The price sounds right. Even if the bearings and synchronizers are OK, you may need to replace the Extention Housing bushing and seal that the yoke slips into. I also relaced the front input shaft bearing retainer and seal since the old one was galled and worn. The parts house told me that there is not a steel version of the front bearing retainer made for the 4 cyl T5's. I was hoping to eliminate the aluminum one.

Get the pigtails or cut the wires off of the reverse and neutral position sensors.

200 is a good deal for a core... mine was 375.00 including shipping to me from AZ to GA...

even if you have to rebuild it, although I would just replace the rear seal and install a stainless-steel bearing retainer and forget about it, mine was just fine installed as is, I was originally going to rebuild it, but was reminded that the 4cyl is nothing behind a T5 and the chances are better than average it is not going to need rebuilt, unless you know for sure it is toasted, you can look into the tranny and see what needs what before you install it, maybe you get lucky like me and it shifts and runs prefectly with only 150.00 worth of work to install the bearing and seal!

By the way, no matter what the money, it is the best thing you can do to your six cyl to make it run like a dream and drive with ease on the highway... plus much better gas mileage.

Be careful with the gearing, I am running 3.25:1 posi on mine, and it is right at the line for driveability(I would not go any more than that) 3.20 would be nice... Very steap gearing in the first two gears, have to row through those to 3rd before you can get any real range, but the midrange and high end is fabulous... nice punch in fourth on the freeway!
