Taller shackles to raise the back end?

Question for you all -

My 65 mustang rides a little lower in the back then it does in the front - maybe by 1/2 to 1/4 inch. Not much. I like the stance of the car but want to raise it up in the back since I sometimes get some scraping when I go over big bumps. I don't want to lower the front to match the back.

Does anyone make taller shackles to raise up the rear end? I would think that woudl be the easiest solution to the problem but I can't find them online.

Thanks!

They're real easy to make yourself. Go to your local metal shop and get the same width and proper thickness. Cut, drill, paint and install. Your can make them with multiple settings to change the height when ever you want..ZZ

New springs would be best but since you are only lifting an inch or less, I would think the taller shackles would work fine. If you can, remove one and take it to a metal or machine shop and ask them to make them the length you want. They would have the proper tools for making accurate copies.

around here you can get clamp on overload half leaves forabout $15 which will raise the rear about 3/4". another easy option is adjustable overload air shocks. such as Gabriel highjackers or similar monroe's.
these are neat because you can vary the attitude by changing the air pressure. on my wifes cougar we put the air valve just inside the trunk flange under the rear deck lid. you open the trunk and can air up the ride height. you dont want to crank these up too high on a full time basis however as the shock will carry the full weight inflated over about 80psi unless you concurrently add the overload half leaves or shackles. Autozone gives a 2yr unlimited warrantee on gabriels. caution .....these are a tight fit. you need to tighten the top attachment biscuits last after the car weigth has seated on the shock and aired up or you can create a binding situation. we finally put shackles on the back as well. she likes a full dago'd look. it is amazing how tight it is getting the shackle bushings in and out. i used some torlon hotrod bushings in lieu of the stock rubber. we used the lowest setting on the shackle of the three positions, combined with the gabriels. gives the best ride and a 3-4 adjustement range. we need to cut off the tails of the shackles now.

Mr Gasket makes a set for around $30.00 IIRC.

I had the same problem but fixed it with a set of air shocks with seperate lines.

8) when raising the suspension with longer shackles, make the shackles thicker to compensate for the added flexability of the longer shackles. as for adding air shocks, i like them and use them, but remember to reinforce the upper shock mount to prevent the shock punching through the trunk floor. a larger, and thick, fender washer between the shock and the trunk floor does nicely. you may have to trim the shock mount insulators to compensate for the thickness of the washer.

How old are the springs? I had the same problem but changed springs not only is the rear end higher now but you can feel the difference going over a speed bump for example. There is less bounc coming off the bump. It soaks up the impact much better and rebounds much better.

You can get springs that raise the car as well.

i put in new springs, then mistakenly jacked the car on one and now it sags to one sidfe a little...annoying

Thanks guys

The springs are new. And I purchased good ones, not the cheapie replacement springs.

I think the issue is I'm using cut V8 springs in the front (they guy told me I may have to trim some more after installation to get the ride height correct)

Thing is I like the car to be raised up just a bit. I'm using 15x7 and I didn't roll the fenders so I don't have problems with clearance in the front, which I like. So I'd rather raise the rear a bit to compensate.

I'll look into trying to fab my own and see what happens.

i am using higher compression spring on front

just incase.

i was told they will slowly sag...I am hapy with my hieght for now
maybe raise back but I am not cuttting front. drives nice

for making your own shackles how would picking up a used leaf spring work, cutting and drilling so its an 1nch or however much longer than the origional shackle....Leaf spring steel is plenty strong right?

Make your own. I think those multi posistion one look dumb when you use only the top hole and the rest of the schakle is like hanging down below the spring. Make your own with one hole in it where you need it..
