Tempo MPFI Turbo conversion

Ever since I read the Tempo EFI conversion I have been wondering if this would work. Simply mount six injectors in the log pointing down the runners and use the Tempo TB as just that, a throttle body. Maybe even use the central injector for methanol injection. Then add megasquirt along with a turbo and front-mount intercooler. Sound feasible?

I think there is someone that did put injectors in the log or at least got as far as getting the bungs in. I dont recall ever seeing more progress than that but I could have missed it. Finding a local shop or having the tools to do it yourself are the big tricks because shipping a whole head would get expensive. If you are going to do multiport dont bother using that crappy old tempo body, there are plenty of better options out there for a plain throttle body. As long as you have to do a bunch of machine work why not do it for a more modern 2bbl TB? That way you could maybe get some air into the log.

I have not looked that close into staging injectors and stuff like that. I think some things can be done but I have not looked into it myself. I cant think of anyplace you could program in different types of injectors so having that big of difference in them may be a problem. Another problem is I dont know if you would want to put meth into stuff that old, those things were built before they were thinking of putting alcohols in most fuel so I dont know how the injector seals and regulator would hold up so again why bother with that old tempo body. Why not machine a few extra bungs for your meth injectors into the log along with the regular ones?

Another thing to remember any injector above around 40 lbs/hr is going to be less common and more expensive. GM TBI's were by far the most common ones out there and even those can cost $50+ for rebuilds on ebay. I have had many great ideas that were shot down by the cost of big injectors.

Ill agree.

All sounds great, except using the tempo TB. The main benefit of the tempo TB for a EFI conversion is that it has everything in one package. If you aren't using the injector (and subsequently the regulator) built onto it, then it doesn't really make much sense any more.

I would also argue that, unless you have the tools in-house, once you get done rebuilding a stock head & doing all the machining you will need to do for this, you are going to be close to at least 50% of the price of the new AL head (probably more like 75%). Now, I know there is a lot of merit to working with what you have, but some things are just good money after bad. I think that you (we) would be much better off just buying the new head
(which already has pads for injector bungs) and going from there.

That's what I plan to do...

This is mostly a theoretical exercise as I don't really have the time to devote to a project like this any time soon and I totally agree, Mike's aluminum head would be vastly superior to the type of ghetto rig I am postulating. The thing I liked about the Tempo TB was that it was basically a bolt-on and the angle of the inlet would make it pretty easy to plumb up to, say that old Volvo intercooler I've got laying around. Linc ran 13s blowing through a stock carb, so I figured the Tempo TB would work just fine. Problem with it is that TBI kinda sucks and besides that there isn't a TBI injector big enough to support a 200+ hp turbo 200.

Now, if I really DID do something like this, I wouldn't have to rebuild the head. I have a '78 Zephyr Z-7 with only 54k original miles sitting in the driveway.

I so wish I could do this. I just wish I had the time. I was actually offered a free rebuilt 460 with an Edelbrock intake and a Carter AFB carb the other week but I passed on it, no time to pull it, no truck to move it, and no place to keep it. I coulda slapped that biatch into the Zephyr and run at least mid 13s if not 12s, but it still wouldn't have been nearly as much fun as turbocharging the original 200.
