Temporary timing fix

Here's the deal:

discovered the other day that the vacuum advance on my dizzy is KAPUT! Before I had a chance to consider pulling it to buy a replacement, had my tachometer nicked from my car a couple of nights ago, another expense! Add to that, some outstanding repairs that are required elsewhere on the car are likely to be a little steep. To top this off, January has so far been an expensive month and there's stuff-all of my pay left for other living expenses (I hate monthly pay   ) Therefore it may be some time before I can get a replacement vac advance unit. What I want to know is:

Can I artificially advance the timing to compensate a little for the lack of vacuum advance?? The other day I blocked off the vacuum line to the vac advance unit and advanced the standard timing of 6° BTDC to 10° BTDC at an idle of 600rpm. Is that far as I can go? Could I go further?? The car isn't usually driven that hard, its my daily driver to work and back, and will occationally get a run on the Hwy to clear the cobwebs out. The motor is a 1971, 250 cu inch in an XY falcon (if that helps)

Any advice is appreciated.

Regards,

Teddy :)

My mate reckons if you put something off, it gets cheaper. I don't agree when it comes to car repairs...

I will LOAN you an unused rebuilt, recurved dizzy until June 30th, on the basis of "you bend, you mend". How's that? :P You pay postage each way, and get choice of points or electronic.

Sorry for the delay in getting back here. Haven't had a lot of time lately to spend on the the 'net. Thanks for the offer Addo, very generous of you. But I for the moment I think I'll persevere with what I have. Reason being is that I thought long and hard about what you said in the first couple of lines of your post. I decided I REALLY should make an effort to get things repaired and maintained. Actually, I was underneath my old XY looking into a problem with the speedo when I stopped to think about it. When I was under there I had a bit of a look around and found that the dreaded rust I thought would be lurking in more places than I could count wasn't actually too bad. Most of the metal looked in reasonable shape. (either that or the blood was rushing to my head and I was dreaming while wedged in a tight space!! ) It actually gave me a little more hope that the car might (and I stress might....) be saveable and returned to a much better looking and drivable state than it currently is. It sort of made me re-prioritise a few issues with the car and look into fixing things and not letting them go on for WAY too long.

Regards,

Teddy :)
