The best straight six?

Fords Falcon 4.0DOHC engine. It's a Datsun at half the price engine. And the Nissan/Datsun L and R sereis engines were BMW at half the price engines.

It was nothing to get a stock Nissan 3.0 in liner and make 650 hp out of it with a turbo. A Nismo 2.6 GTR engine could go to over 1000 hp. Now, the Ford 4.0 eclipses that, with over 600 hp via a stock Turbo reworked, and 1500 hp possible.

No contest.

If Ford kill the 4.0 Dohc engine block, or fail to make a iron blocked Diesel derivative, I'll have to swap camps and work on Nissan engines.

Basically when I get my 67 Ill keep the stock 200 six with a c-4 intially but eventually id like to install another straight six engine(or???) that has more power, improved gas milage that adresses the problems of the 200-6(ie lousy intake log restricted breathing mainfold/1 bb carb), ease of finding the needed parts, ease of fitting it in the 67 engine bay with minimal alteration.I want to keep the 60's style but upgrade anything I can mechanically with minimal downtime without having to go the v-8/5spd route which I really cant stand.

Looked at both links and found very interesting--question is how easy would it be to get either choice here in the United States??and they do come with auto trans??? Im not driving a stick shift.

My first vote goes to the BMW M54 inline six engine. It made 332hp at 7900rpm and 262 ft lbs of torque at 4500rpm.

Second vote goes to the Oz Chrysler Hemi Six.

The top of the line performance engine in the E49 Chargers produced 302 hp (225 kW) @ 5600 rpm and 320 ft·lbf (434 N·m) of torque @ 4400 rpm. The increased power is due mainly to a more aggressive camshaft, high-load valve springs, triple 45 mm DCOE Weber sidedraught carburetors, tuned-length exhaust headers and a higher compression ratio of 10.0:1.

Naturally aspirated versions are capable of making 400-430 horsepower and 360-390 ft·lbf of torque, with the best modified version revving up to 7000-7600 rpm.

Any thoughts on the AMC/Jeep straight six??

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/40.html

Specifications (2003) Description: in-line six, overhead valve (two per cylinder), flat-face followers, hydraulic lifters, cast iron block and head
Displacement: 3960 cc (242 cubic inches)
Bore and stroke 98.4 mm x 86.7 mm
Compression ratio 8.8:1
Redline: 5,300 rpm

Maximum power, 2003, Wrangler:

USA - 190 hp (142kW)@4,600 rpm; 235 lb-ft (319 Nm) @ 3,200 rpm
Europe - 130 kW (177 hp) @ 4600 rpm; 296 N·m @ 3500 rpm
Fuel injection (final form): sequential multiple-port, electronic
In the Wrangler, 0-60 in 9.9 seconds (manual; 10.6 seconds, four-speed automatic); top speed 108 mph - the Wrangle weighed over two tons, so those aren't bad times.

Go Japan!
2JZ-GTE I'd love to shove one of those in an older straight axle toyota pickup.
I rode in an '85 Toy with a single turbo (7M-GTE) once riding on 35's with 5spd, scary fast..

IIRC the high HP BMW I6 is more of a tuning issue, it was detuned for the states but not 100% sure.

As for the Chrysler hemi-six one guy here who has a E49 Charger picture in his sig and apparetnly owns a E49 Charger imports Oz parts here. I would contact him and Mike "Az Coupe" owns Classic Inlines and can import stuff from Oz.

I have somewhere a Aussie car mag that has one of the E49 Chargers with the Hemi six with the factory 3 x 2bbl side draft Webers and hands down IMHO the Hemi Six E49 Valiant Chargers are definately the most beautiful Mopar I have ever seen.

Another vote for Cummins.

If we're talking Dodge Rams with ISB's, I'd agree if we were also talking manual transmissions. The New Venture's are tough. But the auto's that have been offered have been lacking. It's way too common for someone to shear input and/or output shafts when adding more power, even with only just programming upgrades.

But I believe that the subject was intended for car and not truck application. There my bias is towards our Ford products.

i would go with a 200 or a 250 and modify the log on a 77 or later head or buy an aluminum head. basically just swap out the head with a modified log or an aluminum - minimal down time.

For what?
diesel-cummins
low rpm torque,last forever-300
decent fuel economy,last forever-200/250
horsepower- that nissan skyline motor

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Jaguar XK6 engine, probably one of the sexiest engines ever put into the sexiest car ever.

The first time I ever went faster than 100mph was in a Jag w/ a 6, and I'll never forget that awesome shredding-canvas sound!

For me the best 6 is like the best microbrew or chocolate chip cookie. Its whatever is the one I have at the moment. In this case, the mighty Ford 300. Owned it for coming up on 32 years. I previously owned some 223's, a 200, and a 240. My folks & some of their folks owned AMC, chrysler and Ch*y I-6 engines all good and servicable.

Best of all worlds compromise the 240-300. Most long lived the 225 slanty.

the 225 slanty was taken to school for reliabilty by the 265 hemi people thought the slant was tough then got the hemi.
that was one indystructo engine its like it was designed to take 600hp at 8000 rpm then detuned to make 200
