The most simple fuel injection?

What are the more "simple" options for fuel injecting a 1966 170ci? I have a 170 in a '66 Bronco that I use for 4-wheeling, and I am wanting fuel injection so it will handle the steep stuff better without stalling. Take note that the word simple was in quotation marks indicating I know there is no such thing. Maybe simpler is a better word. I am most interested in the 4-wheeling improvements and I'm not concerned whether or not there is an improvement in gas mileage or performance over the carb. I assume that throttle body injection is the way to go? I was looking at these kits from Weber at http://www.carburetion.com/Weber/weberinjection.asp

I don't mind spending the cash, but are there any other cheaper options out there? If I fuel inject the 170 I am also thinking about turbocharging it, any thoughts on this. Has anybody on here turbo'd a 170 before? I am probably going to hack the intake log and build a smoother intake manifold for it.

Thanks.

I had a '79 VW rabbit that had a mechanical fuel injection that was simple. I have considered using that system for a multi-port type injection system. It would not be hard and would be all plumbing. No electrons or blue smoke.

isn't mech. fuel injection much more prone to problems though?

i would think that TBI would be the simplest to do, you could even do a triple TBI setup much like the Offy 3x1 setup

The electronics aren't a big problem, I understand them fairly well, meaning I can handle running the wiring and sensors and fine tuning the kit computers . Are there any junkyard throttlebody systems that could be adapted to the 170? I guess the programming would be a problem there.

What about turbocharging, does anybody have any comments on turbo'n a 170?

i believe (and don't quote me) that there's a TBI that has the same baseplate as the Holley 5200 carb
it's been discussed here (although possibly only briefly) i'll try to find the thread

Hey, thanks. I did do some searching around here and a few other places but I'm having trouble finding much info.

whups, it was a Holley 2300, not a 5200

I pulled one from an 81 LTD, it has the same footprint as a Holley 2300. My plan was to use a megasquirt controller.

Here are some pics. (excuse the mess  )

and this was cut out from one of x's posts, the thread was 'bout SEFI, but it looks like it might have some good info

Please go for the direct mount log Holley# 2300, Autolite #2100 or Motorcraft #2150 2-bbl carb adaptor, using either the Schendahls method.

The TBI Escort or Taurus set-up is okay too.

You can do this via using two Escort TBI's in a manner similar to Mustang Geezers set up.

That VW mechanical FI had a mass air damper that modulated a needle valve arrangment that contolled the fuel flow to each cylinder. A/F ratio was changed with an allen screw. The needle valves sizing would be the only catch.

IIRC, that was it.

Sounds like the Bosch K system. You could use the regulation off a V6 Volvo to supply adequate fuel.

One drawback is that parts are getting dear.

The TBI on the Ford 5.0 have the same bolt pattern as Holly two barrels. Most likely all of the Ford V8's that went from carb to TBI have the same bolt pattern.

Thanks, asa67_stang, those thread links really helped. I ran across the Megasquirt EFI controller. I looked up their website. That, coupled with a throttle body, sounds like what I'm looking for.

Thanks again
