The Plan

Ok. The goal is to make a nice every day driver with some power and better gas mileage.

To start things off a swap to a T-5 from a late 80's mustang. (1,200)

Wait till Mike's heads come out, get the heads/intake/turbo kit. Not really sure of price but I am going to guess around 2,500
In addition to that put in a classic inlines cam 214/214 lift 145
Then I am undecided on carb vs efi since I don't really know much about how to set it up. But my guess would be a Holley 5200 (price?) or something like that. All of this would be on a recently rebuilt motor (10k that I would buy). (400 for motor)

Later on down the road I would plan on changing over to Power Rack n' Pinion and disk brakes (2500). Also change out the rear and possibly add disk brakes in the back as well. (dont know the price yet). This will be a while cause I would need all new rims and tires too.

Any comments? Ideas?

Sounds like a good idea, but I want to make sure it idles nicely, and from what I remember that is the most mild cam they have over stock. I figured that would be my safest bet.

Sounds good, but unless your current mileage is just way out of line right now, I woulld not expect it to improve a bunch. You'll be making changes that will induce your right foot to ride closer to the floorboard a greater percentage of the time. 8)

To increase mpg:

T5, good call on that

electronic ignition

5200 is good, but depends on your foot being light. EFI is good, but depends on deeper pockets and knowledge of set-up. Any 1 barrel is the cheapest and easiest way to save gas and stay slow doing it.

2:79 or 3:00 rear end with 14" or 15" wheels

See my signature for my set-up as mine is a 300 mile a week daily driver. I get in the low 20s. I'm sure I could get in the mid 20s more often, but I've got discipline issues.

Anything over 60mph hurts mpg.

with a smogger 200 (low compression) T5 3.50 gears and a 5200 I was getting 25-27mpg. I had the timing retarded a bit though which seemed to help some.

I think with the new head and a 5200 it will feel choked off. really EFI will give great milage. I might have to go look for a massair setup to put on my port head.

I found a "runnig rebuilt (less than 10K on rebuild) I6 200, assembled w/3 spd manual, with a used c-4 for I-6 (complete) for $400.00."

Which might be the better option to buy the engine do all the work of while it is out on a cherry picker than just plop pretty much the whole drivetrain in. (opinoins are welcome) Also .. is 400 a fair price for that engine (I don't need the trans's or know if they have any resale value)
