Thermostat relocation

Has anyone got opinions on this? I've noticed some Jap cars have the thermo off the lower hose, towards the body. Also seen it suggested for Clevos in hot conditions. The main idea, if I remember right, was that the water in the radiator was already partly cooled by the time the thermostat opened and it began circulating, providing more effective cooling.

I can't see why it wouldn't work on a six. Worth it, though?

Adam.

Common on engines with reverse flow cooling. Water enters the head first, exits thru the block. Witness the latest Chevy V8's.

Might be difficult to re-engineer an engine to properly do that. I have seen Clevlands with bypass hoses between block and head to strategically alter coolant flow in the head.

8) the early 2.6 and 2.8 V6 ford engines use that tstat location and dont seen to have a problem.

But they also used a Renault-style three-postion thermostat. Darn expensive...cost me 65 ping for my old Cortina V6

 Maybee you could get one off your motheres R16, eh Adam?

Cannibalise the R16 - no way! It's cost more than a new Corolla, to date. 30+ hours on the wheel painting, for example. It should be a driving shell in 8 weeks!

There's a couple of things I recall seeing in the wrecking yards that might be worth adapting. I'll try it on Dan's car, as he's a willing guinea pig (beggars can't be choosers).

Cheers, Adam.
