Throttle Cable and setup

I had problems after doing the 2v carb conversion with a finding a suitable throttle cable. However, I finally found a perfect one.

I didn't think that a finding a throttle cable with a 36" sleeve would be so hard! The hardest part was finding someone how stated that the sleeve is indeed 36" instead of the generic 36" throttle cable, where the cable is 36" and the sleeve is 24". It is also one of the cheapest cables I found period. I got mine installed last night, and thanks to the nice instructions it was really simple and only needed to trim off about 6 inches.

For the carb side, I used a bracket like this: http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/157050/10002/-1?parentProductId= However, I found an off brand one on ebay for much cheaper, and works just the same! I did have to bend it slightly so the throttle cable adjuster nut wouldn't hit the valve cover. Nothing a pair of pliers couldn't handle!

For the accelerator pedal, I'm still trying to find a better setup, but for now, and for about a year, I've been using an ebay knockoff one of these: http://www.jegs.com/i/Lokar/625/BFG-6012/10002/-1 but I had to make a spacer to lift it off the floor pan, so I used some square steel stock I had laying around. It works, but want something that not only looks better, but has a better mount.

EDIT: Looks like this should work for the throttle pedal: http://www.jegs.com/i/Lokar/625/BAG-6115/10002/-1

I'll take pictures and attach as soon as possible!

The latter Factory Ford pendant cable hardware is better. The 69-70 Mustang onwards and 78 onwards Fox Body stuff is really easy to fit with aftermarket cable inners and outers.

Ford really put the effort in making a good cable accelerator, probably because the hotest 69's and the later 85-93 Foxes had some of the most virile small block engine combinations ever, and making the sub 15 second street rockets around in those years made a good cable set up imperitive.

To unfairly single out a few...the carbs are often the wrong way around, but the long throttle system is common and easy to fit.

jahearne and 62 Ranchero 200 and the other Classic Inlines Aluminum head users like wcol have been very good followers of Mikes suggested Lokar cable set up. The line diagrams for I6's and V8's in the 65 to 69 years make if hard for us six in line guys....they don't really relate untill you see them worked out "in the metal".

sometimes have to use the longest line in the 36 inch or 24 inch inner line.

Lokar is really the best.

The transmission wasn't toast when I first got it. It worked quite well only the shift points came on too soon. It shifted into third at 35 mph in city traffic. Nothing a shift kit couldn't take care off. And of course overdrive kicked in whether you wanted or not; having an overdrive lockout is a great addition.

Adjusting the TV is extremely important with an AOD and a fairly simple process if you have an OEM setup or a carb with an adaptor kit from Lokar, which I had neither.

I adapted 250 throttle linkage bolted to the valve cover operated from 1970 Mustang throttle pedal and cable. Also used a Lokar TV cable to the AOD. It's not a perfect setup, but it works; however, a constant pressure valvebody takes the worry out of it.

I went with a 289 GT air cleaner, CI chrome valve cover and DSII with emission stickers and PCV it almost looks like a factory option, but then the wrapped header and aluminum radiator gives it away.

Thanks,

Some photos and links. The result is you can fit a really long cable and still have a lovely lightto firm throttle with great modulation.

wcol, you da man!
