Throttle shaft leak on a 1100?

Could a leak around the throttle shaft be enough to cause a high speed vibration at idle especially in gear? I can hardly feel slop in the shaft but it is there. I can stall the engine by spraying carb cleaner around the shaft with the air cleaner on. Its so bad the center ring on the steering wheel rattles and so do the keys. It will idle down at 550. Idle speed dont make any differnce, you have to get above 1000 for it to smooth out. I have put a carb kit it (autolite 1100) and all other aspects seem good. The only vac leak I can find is around the throttle shaft. The idle mixture seems to respond, I can make it rough and stall either direction and it has about 3 turns where it seems happy in or out of gear. Compression was +/-5 pounds. Ignition upgraded to Dura with no change. Vac at idle is steady 18"

Ideas?

have you checked to see if a single cylinder is your problem by pulling individual plug wires and seeing if one makes no difference? i know that on mine, it was doing something like that and the first two wires came apart at teh spark plug, one of those i went to pull it off teh dizzy and its a naked wire with a few chips of the end laying in the hole :fume: those were carquest wires, but whatever youre running, take a look at it - its at least a good diagnostic - it could tell you (for example) that cyl 2 isnt firing, thus giving a rough condition. or it could tell you that they all fire equally well, thus leaving you with a fuel problem
if you have a car with a similar carb that you could swap over for the test, that would also help you isolate the problem

Anyone ever hear of a bad vibration at idle in gear (C4) and at high RPM's? Im starting to wonder if the motor is fine. I have tried to adjust the idle mixture with it in gear and it responds the same as when it in park. Looks like im going to have to look for a transmission shop that knows these oldies.

Maybe the driveshaft needs balancing?
a balance problem usually gets worse as speed increases.
as for your tranny, most of what would go wrong would usually be while youre moving, cause when youre in park, all thats spinning is the T/C and the input shaft. nothing there would do it
still sounds to me like the engine is missing a cyl or 2
