My motor is now ticking and is noisier on cold days & nights, a mechanic says it's a hydraulic lifter somewhere in the motor and will go for ever as long as the oil is kept up to it, is there a way of stopping it other than a major rebuild of the motor, is there an oil additive to quieten it down. I have tried all most everything short of hit the bloody thing with a big hammer. It's not using any more fuel.

Break big problems into lots of little ones.

Replace the lifters, pushrods , sled fulcrum (rocker ball) and rockers. It's dead easy on cross flows. The cam lobes may be worn a little, but as long as you can flip the lifters out, you will fix the problem. There is a 10 dollar lifter tool that has a 90 degree bend on it to take them out via the circlip.

The lifter galleries sometimes need a bit of gentle cleaning to get the lifters out if the engine has seen many miles

Preprime with lifters with oil, add a full layer of moylybond grease on the cam surfaces. Preload to the required torque, wait a few hours of driving to allow the dry lifter nose to subside, then drive the pants off it.

The heat gasket is the only other thing to check.

Yep, but unlike the good old Log head, the cross flows have a very heavy rocker gear and more load on the lifters. If it's noisey, its better to redo all 12. You can get at the lifters very easily for the alloy heads, which have a huge windowed area to work from.

On the old log heads, its very hard to pull the lifters out without remving the head. Hence for them, it's better to try a proprietry additive or take the ATF risk.
