Ticking noise in Engine...

hey Guys,
I have a '62 econoline with a 170. It runs great and I havent had any problems with it, but recently a ticking noise has started. My first thought was valves so I adjusted all of them and its still there.

The noise changes with rpm's and sometimes goes completely away for a few minutes.

Ive had my mechanics stethoscope everywhere and cant seem to track it down....

Any ideas or leads in the right direction would be great, the noise is driving me nuts!!!

Ticking is characteristic of valve lash needing adjustment but exhaust leak can mimic and is often hard to pinpoint. even fuel pump can add some clatter. Lack of oil at low RPM can starve rockers especially if any gunk in passages.. Good to hear it runs great ...

I would agree with PB.

Run some marvel mystery oil in there. My guess if your valve lash is correct you have an exhaust leak at the gasket.

Guess I should have checked the oil level sooner. It was low. I topped it off and let it idle for a while and didnt hear the ticking....We'll see when I get her out on the road. Maybe I was starving the rockers....

8) things that can cause a ticking noise like you describe are;

1: exhaust leak

2: excessive valve lash

3: dirt in the lifters

4: low oil level, as you have found out

5: low oil pressue due to a worn oil pump or worn engine.
