Time to buy a lottery ticket

Hey y'all!

Been busy hanging sheetrock in my shop so haven't had much Mustang time. However, the weather tooka little break so I went out and pulled the DSII to do a recurve. (found a Sun machine!) Anyhow, as I'm pulling it out, the hex drive rod for the oil pump came with it and of course, let go just as I was clearing the hole. Thunk, into the oil pan she went.

Now, the ONLY thing I have found good about getting old is the patience that comes with it. Twenty years ago, I would have flipped out over the whole situation. Instead, I calmly grabbed my telescoping magnetic probe and stuck it down the dizzy hole into the oil pan, felt it grab something and slowly pulled it back out. Low and behold, there was the hex rod hanging on the probe! Could have knocked me over with a feather!! First attempt.

So, who is going to be the one to tell me that I now have to replace the oil pump 'cause if the drive rod comes out, something's broken. I have had the dizzy in and out several times and never had the rod come with it. Any ideas why it happened this time?

Dang, I must still be young, because I flipped out about right here in the story. Not sure on the oil pump though, better not answer for fear of being wrong

Nothing wrong with the pump, just good luck following bad. Been there done that, couldn't find it pulled the pan found two extras.

The pan does double as a spare parts bin .

Ditto on the patience...saves a lot of unnecessary stress on MY pump.

It was probably just torqued a little. No need to panic.

Not sure about a inline six but all most all v8 Ford motors it has a little metal disc that will only slide one way so when the dissy is pulled the shaft won't come out.

If you feel like pulling the pan and pump, you can install a new shaft with the stopper to keep it from happening again.

Otherwise, it should be fine just to put it back together.

We are going to try to get the motor out, rear main seal replaced, engine and bay painted and put back together yet this winter. I'll check out the "spare parts" then.

But first, I've got to finish the drywall (I'd almost rather take an ass whipping) so I can get the Mustang back inside.
