Timing advance

So I've set me timing at 14* (DSII) and the vacuum "nipple" is at around the 4-5 o'clock position. My question is this: did I stab the dizzy in the wrong position, and if so, does it matter as long as my wires all reach?

thanks,

Sounds to me like it is installed a tooth off. A far as I understand, it doesn't matter as long as you have the dizzy timed right. You just may have a problem getting you vac line to reach if you have to retard the timing any more since the vac nipple will be around 6 o'clock...

Thanks, I thought so.

Yes, it's at around 20* btdc now. Even though I'm not pinging I'm hesitant to retard any more as I don't want to overheat either. I may pull and try to restab as it's tugging on the vacuum line now.

On a related note, if you are a tooth off, how do you establish you hit the right tooth when you retry? Is it luck, or do you try to find like TDC on the #1 piston and go from there?

This is where I bow to the knowledge of others far smarter than I.

I manually crank the engine to TDC and then try and set it to the #1 post on the dizzy. From there, for me it luck - trail and error.

Heck, I have a hard enough time getting the dizzy all the way back in on the oil shaft pin most of the time.

I thought I heard of a trick, but I don't remember what it was.
