Timing question

When I got my engine from the builder, he told me he didn't have any way of setting the timing, but he did this:

piston #1 is at TDC
Rotor is pointing at driver's side fender (perpendicular to and away from block)
the "notch" on the pulley you use to measure timing is sitting exactly at the TDC mark on the timing reader thing.

Is this right? What needs to be adjusted?
Thanks guys,
Stephen

the vacuum advance canister should generally be pointing parallel to the block (ie, pointing at the driver's seat). The rotor should be pointing pretty much spot on at the #1 plug wire (remember the dizzy cap is notched so it should only fit one way). You can however make the dizzy work if it is off by one tooth either way. Make sure the oil pump shaft goes in without forcing, and that the dizzy is all the way down. Note that the dizzy will 'spin' about 15 degrees when you insert so you need to compensate for that.

Try to get the timing somewhat correct (5 to 10 degrees advanced) with a timing light and an initial cranking. If you have a new cam/lifters, you will want to follow break in procedures so you should get the timing pretty close to allow for that 2500 rpm break in without pinging.

When you put the distributor cap on, is the rotor pointing to the #1 tower on the cap? If it does not, can you rotate the distributor enought to make the rotor point to the #1 tower? If not, you will have to pull the distributor and orient it such that the rotor is pointing to the #1 tower. Then adjust the distributor slightly so that the rotor is pointing to the number one tower slightly before the engine reaches TDC.

What size motor, what year, manual or automatic transmission?????
Points or electronic ignition???? Jim

i think he got a fully rebuilt '60 something 200 block with a 70 head thats bolting up to his stock C4 with a 5200 2bbl swap

or atleast thats what he told me last time we talked

Yep, he nailed it on the head

it's a 200ci block with a 1970 170ci head, auto trans, electronic ignition.

I will go take a look at it and put the cap on to see which way it's pointing. Thanks for the help

Remeber to check with the position of the distributer rotor at TDC for Cyl 1 on the compression stroke not the exhaust stroke.

According to my Shop Manual a 1965 - 200cid egine with automatic transmission should be set to 10degrees BTDC (before top dead center). With electronic ignition the timing is usually 4 degrees (plus or minus) further advanced than with points; so 10 degrees plus 4 degrees would leave you in the 14 degree BTDC range, I believe?? Jim
