Howdy BF:

At your elevation, I'd start by trying 14 degrees of initial. If you don't get any knock, given the grade of gas you use, try adding 2 more degrees. You didn't say whether this is an auto or manual trans, and I have no memory. There is not much to be gained past about 16 degrees, except heat. You might also try regapping your plugs to .045" to .050" and going a step colder on heat range.

The idle should be as low as possible with no dying at the stop signs. With the price of gas less is better.

Enjoy!

Adios, David

BF, just to add intial advance without knowing your engine combinations is just a guess. Yes its a step in the right direction, but need more info.
What is your compression ratio, camshaft & other engine upgrades?
After you give us the total picture we can give you proper advice on the proper #'s, such as what type of distributor you are using & carburetion. William
